Aberystwyth Town FC have endorsed a bucket collection for Bronglais Hospital Stroke Ward by the gate prior to Saturday’s crucial match at home to Caernarfon Town.
Well-known local runner Dic Evans, who has always been a big Black and Greens supporter (when not running) suffered a stroke at Christmas and is still in hospital recovering. Dic was a founder of the Red Kite Challenge race in Devils Bridge, which is celebrating its 20th year. This year's race is being held on April 29th and is being organised by Club Supporters Liason Officer Tomos Roberts and the rest of the Red Kite Committee while Dic continues to recover. Aberystwyth Town vs Caernarfon Town
JD Cymru Premier Saturday 22nd April 12.45pm KO One of the biggest matches in ATFC’s recent history looms this Saturday, as Caernarfon Town visit Aberystwyth University Park Avenue for a final day decider. Following Caernarfon’s win at Flint Town United on Wednesday evening, the permutations are now simple. Aber must better Flint’s result at Pontypridd to guarantee Cymru Premier status for a 31st consecutive season. Although both ATFC and Flint can match Pontypridd’s tally of 38 points, the gap to Ponty’s goal difference can be considered insurmountable for Aber at this stage, meaning that the South Walians are safe in all but name. There is plenty of reasons for those of a Black & Green persuasion to be optimistic coming into this fixture however. Anthony Williams side are in good form and have only lost twice in the preceding 10 matches. The team’s desire and “never give in” attitude has been evident throughout this run of form, and they have developed a knack of scoring important late goals. Seven of Aber’s ten league victories this season have also come at home – all characteristics which could be crucial come Saturday lunchtime. Saturday’s opponents, Caernarfon Town, secured their own safety on Wednesday night with a 3-2 victory at Flint Town United. They come into this match having won two out of their last three matches and have 39 points from their 31 matches so far. Joe Faux’s late winner at the Essity Stadium also made him Caernarfon’s joint top goalscorer this season, level on 7 goals with Fidel O’Rourke who departed The Oval in January and one ahead of Lloyd Marsh-Hughes. Former ATFC players Darren Thomas and Ben Wynne have also hit the net a few times this season; Thomas has six goals to his name whilst Wynne has 5. Dewch yn llu i gefnogi'r bois! Caernarfon Town's 3-2 win at Flint this evening means they have secured their JD Cymru Premier status for the forthcoming season, and the final relegation place will be allocated either to Aber Town or Flint on Saturday. The Black and Greens and Flint stand level on 35 points, but Flint have a superior goal difference, meaning that Aber need to improve on Flint's result away to Pontypridd on Saturday to retain their Cymru Premier Status. Both matches kick off at 12.45pm and Aber are offering reduced price entry of £5 for the vital match at Park Avenue. See you there! Aberystwyth Town is saddened to hear of the passing of Salvatore Corbisiero, father of the Black and Greens' previous First Team Manager Antonio.
Italian born Salvatore has become a regular visitor to Park Avenue over the past few years and his friendly presence will be sadly missed. Aberystwyth Town FC extend its deepest sympathies to Antonio, his immediate family and the wider Corbisiero family and friends on their sad bereavement. Aber Town Manager Anthony Williams expressed his pride after a really positive performance from the Black and Greens at Bridge Meadow, Haverfordwest on Saturday evening, in his post match interview with Sgorio’s Sioned Dafydd: “We came with a game plan to frustrate them, we rode our luck a little bit in the first half, but the second half we dominated, we hit the bar, we could have gone two nil. Just a little one where they scored the goal but overall you couldn’t ask any more from them. Lady Luck wasn’t on our side today”. Town came into the game with some significant absences, with Jonathan Evans suspended and four other players unavailable with knocks, however the eleven players who started and finished the game did themselves proud: “It’s pleasing, they stuck to the game plan and recognised where they were playing. I was really low on bodies today but do you know what, they’ve given their all and we kick on to next week and go again.” Aber have one more match to come, at home to Caernarfon Town on Saturday, and are already looking forward to the game: “It’s only two defeats now in ten games and we’ve come here disappointed that we drew – it says a lot about the group. (Next week) is a one off game. We go into it full of confidence, full of belief and we’ll go again!”. Appreciation also came from other quarters. Suspended striker Jonathan Evans tweeted after the game “what a performance, 5-6 players missing, deserved 3 points today fantastic battling!!”; Club Media Officer Matthew Wallace posted “so proud of the performance today from Aber Town, superb character and desire when up against it”; and supporter Neil Courtney voiced his approval on Facebook: “Perfformiad gora’ ers sbel … noson arall – tri phwynt!” Highlights of Saturday’s game will be shown on Sgorio this evening at 10pm.
