Aberystwyth Town are delighted to announce the retention of Jack Thorn for the 2022/23 season - his 3rd season in Black and Green!
After starting his career at Wrexham at the age of seven as a left-back, he progressed through the ranks at The Racecourse and was often deployed as a left winger, sometimes playing centrally. Son of former Wimbledon Crazy Gang FA Cup winner Andy, Jack followed his father’s footsteps in the professional game and was named as an unused substitute in the FA Cup against Newport and FA Trophy against Boston in December 2018. He made his first senior National League appearance during the 2018/19 campaign against Harrogate Town coming on as a late substitute for The Dragons. Jack joined Town in September 2020 after his release from Wrexham AFC, following a spell on loan with Newtown during the 2019/20 campaign. Making 23 first-team appearances in his first season in Black & Green, Jack was handed the armband for the 2021/22 season and was an ever-present in the line-up, making 35 appearances, missing only 1 game all season due to suspension. A committed and tough-tackling central midfielder, "Thorny" has endeared himself to the Green Army over the past 2 seasons. Jack told us: "Last season we had a great group of lads that I really enjoyed working with so I'm excited to see what this season brings us. Having spoken with the gaffer a few times, he's been clear with what we need to progress and so I look forward to being a part of it. Last season, the fans were quality and pushed us every game so I hope they can get behind us once again this season!" Croeso nol, Thorny! / Welcome back, Thorny! Aberystwyth Town are pleased to announce the return of 7-time Cymru Premier winner and centurion goalscorer Alex Darlington for the 2022/23 season!
33-year-old Alex began his footballing career with Wrexham as a seven-year-old before completing a 2-year youth scholarship with The Dragons and spending a season on professional terms at The Racecourse - joined at the time by new Town manager Anthony Williams, known as "Taff". Alex joined The New Saints as a nineteen-year-old, spending nine-and-a-half-years at Park Hall, amassing 234 total appearances and 94 league goals as TNS lifted seven league titles, four Welsh Cups and five League Cups during his spell. Alex was also on target in Europe for The Saints, netting twice against Midtjylland and once against Cliftonville to aid the Oswestry side’s continental efforts. Alex was also capped at international level in 2011 and 2012, making two appearances for Wales’ U23 Semi-Pro side against Estonia U23 and Norway U23. Alex joined Bangor City for a 12-month spell in January 2018 before joining Maltese First Tier side Mosta FC for a six-month spell in January 2019. Alex returned to Wales for the 2019/20 season with Airbus UK before joining Cefn Druids for the 2020/21 campaign. Last season, Alex predominantly featured in a holding midfield position making 17 total starts and 8 appearances from the bench, finding the net once against his former side Cefn Druids as Town ran out 6-0 winners at Park Avenue. Darlo told us: "I'm really looking forward to next season as last season with Aberystwyth was probably the best team spirit I've been involved in over my career. I'm delighted that Taff has come in as manager and I look forward to working with him again as I was with him at Wrexham about 15 years ago so I know how he wants to play. As for next season, I'm hoping we can continue with our form from the end of the season and that the fans can get behind us brilliantly once again like last year." Taff commented: "Alex is a highly experienced player that I know from my playing days while he was a youngster at Wrexham. He has undoubted talent who can pass his knowledge and understanding of the game on to others within the squad. I'm delighted to have him with us for the coming season!" Croeso nol, Darlo! / Welcome back, Darlo! Defender Jack Rimmer has become the latest player to commit his future to the Seasiders after penning a one-year extension on his current deal. Since being handed his debut by Ian Hughes away at Llandudno in 2015, the former Ysgol Penweddig pupil has made nearly a century of appearances for his hometown club over two spells. Welsh speaking Rimmer has an impressive sporting pedigree spanning back to his time in youth football. At a young age, he was invited to a number of academies including Liverpool, Stoke City and Birmingham City. He also part of the Aber United side that won the Ian Rush Super Cup in 2009. Jack earned international honours and was the captain of the club’s Under 19’s side that won the Welsh Premier League Development title in consecutive years. He also scored the winner in the final against Flint in the 2018 rendition of the tournament. His two spells at Aberystwyth have been sandwiched between a stint at JD Cymru North side Penrhyncoch. Speaking about his decision to remain at Aberystwyth University Park Avenue, Rimmer stated, “I was delighted to have been asked to sign again for the upcoming season. When the gaffer rang me, it was an easy decision for me as I’ve heard such great things about him. We’re all buzzing to get going.” “It’s a massive honour to have the opportunity to play for my hometown club once again this season. We’ll have some fresh faces again this year which will be exciting.” “I can’t wait to get back out playing in front of our fantastic supporters” Aberystwyth Town is delighted to announce that Jonathan Evans has signed a one year contract extension which sees him commit to the Black and Greens until the end of the 2022/23 season. 29 year old Evans becomes the third man to confirm his place in Anthony Williams’ squad following the news that last year’s top scorer Sam Phillips and Steff Davies are remaining in Ceredigion bay for the upcoming campaign. Evans, now in his third spell at Aberystwyth University Park Avenue, began his career in the club’s academy where he was spotted by the scouts of Cardiff City Football Club. Whilst there, he represented Wales Schoolboys and Under 16’s side, competing in the Victory Shield for his country. Following a spell in the youth ranks at the Bluebirds, the popular winger spent time at Accrington Stanley before returning to Ceredigion. Evans’ time at Aberystwyth Town has been sandwiched between spells at JD Cymru North outfit Penrhyncoch. Over the course of his time in Aber colours, the former Rooster has amassed a number of highlights including scoring a last minute winner away at Llandudno, grabbing a brace against Haverfordwest County as well as notching the goal that secured the Black and Greens the bragging rights in last season’s Mid-Wales derby against Newtown at Latham Park. On his resigning, Evans told atfc.org.uk, “Within 30 seconds of speaking with the manager, my mind was made up. He spoke very well and made up my mind for me.” “As a local player, I feel I have a duty to stay and fight with my team to get Aber the best placing possible. I can’t wait to get going and see some fresh faces in the squad.” Steff Davies has become the latest player to commit to Aberystwyth Town for the 2022/23 season after signing a one-year extension to his current deal. The talismanic forward played an integral role Aberystwyth’s 8th place finish last season, tirelessly leading the line as well as grabbing crucial goals against Cefn Druids and in both fixtures against Barry Town United in the Relegation Conference. Davies originally joined the Seasiders two seasons ago under the stewardship of Gavin Allen. Prior to his arrival at Aberystwyth University Park Avenue, the forward had amassed Welsh League experience with Haverfordwest County, Bow Street and Penrhyncoch. Davies told atfc.org.uk, “I’m really proud to be singing and playing for my now home town club. I’m looking forward to working with the new manager and meeting the squad.” “I hope we can continue to be competitive and make the town proud again. It’s going to be a tough season as always but I’ll be doing everything I can to reward the club for the faith they’ve shown in me!” Croeso nol i ti Steff!
