Pennock’s Perfect Pen Save Protects Precious Point: Haverfordwest County 0 Aberystwyth Town 012/2/2022
JD Cymru Premier Friday 11th February Haverfordwest County 0 Aberystwyth Town 0 A brave and battling defensive performance earned the young Black and Greens what could be a hugely important point at the Bridge Meadow last night, capped by an astonishing penalty save from keeper Alex Pennock, who repelled Danny Williams’ 74th minute effort to cause jubilation and earn huge acclaim amongst the travelling Black and Green supporters. Pennock had come into the side to replace Gregor Zabret, with Jon Owen returning from injury to replace Steff Davies who himself picked up a niggle in the previous match. Another big Black and Green following greeted the players onto the field, and the hosts showed their attacking intent from the off. Jordan Davies curled a cross past the post from the left, and Ryan George did the same from the right. Dylan Rees headed wide from Elliott Scotcher’s corner, and Jack Wilson sent a shot wide. Following a series of corners Pennock appeared to pull off a super save, touching a volley from Kieran Lewis over the crossbar, though a goal kick was given. Jamie Veale had Aber’s first attempt blocked but back came the hosts with Corey Shepherd seeing a goalbound effort gathered by Pennock low down. Matty Jones sent in a dangerous cross easily collected by Lee Idzi in the home goal, before George crossed for a glorious opportunity for Davies, who missed from close range, and a half characterised by Haverfordwest dominance and a superb defensive show from Aber’s back line ended at 0-0. Visiting supporters were hoping for an improvement after the break and they got it, with Matty Jones almost picking out Harry Franklin, voted Cymru Premier Player of the Month on a supporters’ poll this week, before Franklin almost sneaked in a second time. Aber had a huge let off when Kieron Lewis’ shot cannoned off the crossbar to safety, and then Wilson’s dangerous cross flicked a blue head and fizzed past Pennock’s far post. Sam Phillips then shot wide for Aber, and Franklin nodded Jones’ corner past the post with Aber competing better. Pennock punched a few corners clear to safety, but then with sixteen minutes to go came what looked to be a defining moment when sub Alhagi Touray Sisay was pulled back in the box, and a penalty was awarded to Haverfordwest. With Bridge Meadow holding its breath Danny Williams stepped up, and Pennock dramatically dived to his right to pull off an absolutely brilliant penalty save, his second in three starts for Town this season. Corey Shepherd shot wide and Williams blasted over, before Jonathan Evans came on up front to harry Havvy’s back line, and he himself had a shot from a great position out on the left saved by Idzi just on the ninety. Into injury time and Pennock denied Sisay again at his near post, before Veale almost picked out the flying Lee Jenkins at the far post, and the job was done. Aber were not at their best last night, but cheered on by their loyal supporters, never ending blocks and defensive challenges from the likes of Jack Rimmer, Louis Bradford, Lee Jenkins, Rhys Davies, Matty Jones and Jack Thorn to name but six earned them what could be a hugely significant 24th point come the end of the season. With eighth placed Aber now standing just three points short of Caernarfon in seventh, the Black and Greens this morning can see the possible prize of a Top Six place glittering tantalisingly in the mid distance, dependant on results this afternoon and Connah’s Quay’s potential points deduction. With a Welsh Cup Quarter Final and a possible Top Six decider coming up before the end of the month, it’s not a bad time to be Black and Green. Come on Aber!!! Ahead of Friday night’s big Cymru Premier clash at the Bridge Meadow, between Haverfordwest County and Aberystwyth Town, manager Antonio Corbisiero has sent out a rallying call to Black and Green supporters:
“A massive thank you to all the fans, supporters, volunteers, the Chairman and Board members for making the 1000th game such a special occasion for the club. The players were extremely grateful to all the people who turned out to mark such a special occasion, and we're glad that we played our small part in it by getting a vital victory.” Corbs went on to underline what a difference the supporters can make from the players’ perspective: “We hope the fans can see what we are trying to do as a club, looking to stride forward and obviously your support is always a massive, massive help and incentive to the players when the crowd gets behind the team.” The lads are hoping for another super away turnout from Town supporters for Friday’s Dyfed Derby: “From all the management staff and players, we thank you for your continued support and we hope that as many of you as possible can make it down to Haverfordwest to make a noise down there. I’m sure the Green Army will be in full voice once again so it would be good to see as many fans as we can there. Thanks once again from everyone at Aberystwyth Town for your loyal support!” The match kicks off at 7.45pm at Bridge Meadow. See you all down there! Haverfordwest County vs Aberystwyth Town
JD Cymru Premier Friday 11th February 7.45pm KO After two back-to-back home wins, Aberystwyth Town hit the road again this Friday and head for Pembrokeshire to face last Tuesday’s visitors to Park Avenue, Haverfordwest County. The Seasiders’ form on the road has been impressive recently, with only 1 defeat in the last six away outings in all competitions, and with the recent upturn in form at home, ATFC not only have a Welsh Cup Quarter Final to look forward to next week, but are still mathematically in contention for a Top Six place also! Aber come into this match after a well-earned weekend off, but preparation has already started and the management team and players are hopeful of another big away following for this important fixture. Manager Antonio Corbisiero commented “on Tuesday, we’ll work hard again and prepare right for Haverfordwest away. It’s nice to put on a performance like that for the supporters and hopefully we’ll continue to get a little bit more support each week.” Friday’s hosts are finding wins hard to come by at the moment – last picking up maximum points on 30th October at home to Newtown. Since the league returned in mid-January however, only ATFC have managed to beat the Bluebirds, with two of the current top 3 (Newtown & Penybont) having to settle for just a point from their encounters. Ben Fawcett is still the man to watch at Bridge Meadow, having netted 5 times this season so far. Former Seasider Alhagi Touray Sisay also has 5 goals to his name and always provides a threat, whilst Jordan Davies will be looking to get off the mark following his January move from Connah’s Quay Nomads. Bridge Meadow Stadium can be found by using postcode SA61 2EX. Tickets have been reduced to £5 for Adults, £3 for Concessions and U16s are free. Green Army …. It’s time for Match 1001! Aberystwyth Town FC are delighted to announce that their average home attendances for JD Cymru Premier matches after phase one is the Club’s highest since 2014/5, at 382, or a total of 4206 supporters over the eleven first phase matches.
This figure was hugely boosted by the 883 who attended Tuesday night’s win over Haverfordwest, which itself was Park Avenue’s biggest league crowd since 1168 turned up to see the 3G facility opened in October 2016. Park Avenue also saw crowds of 523 for the Welsh Cup tie versus Aber Valley in September, 428 versus Cefn Druids at the end of January and 401 for the season opener versus Barry Town in August. With three Cup ties added, 5350 people have watched 14 games to date at the home of the Seasiders. It appears that the significant local representation in Antonio Corbisiero’s matchday squad has helped, as has the Black and Greens’ recent upturn in fortunes, and the team and Management Staff will be hoping that the Green Army assemble again in very large numbers this Friday evening for the huge return match at Bridge Meadow, away to Haverfordwest County (KO 7.45pm). Thank for your wonderful support! Jamie and Owain attend Ysgol Penglais with Isaac at Ysgol Penweddig. Jamie, younger brother of first team stalwart Mathew, made his first team debut at home to TNS earlier this season and is part of the First Team Squad. Wales' fixtures are as follows: Thurs 10th March (KO 7pm) Northern Ireland (Away) Thurs 7th April (KO 7pm) Scotland (Away) Thurs 14th April (KO 7pm) ENGLAND (Home at Llansawel) Thurs 21st April (KO 7pm) EIRE (Home at Caernarfon Town) Best of wishes lads from everyone at Park Avenue! Aber Town’s Manager Antonio Corbisiero was full of praise for his players in conversation with Sgorio’s Dylan Ebenezer after Tuesday night’s live game, and the famous 2-0 win over Haverfordwest County. “I’m happy, absolutely. The boys put in a huge, huge shift and they were incredible tonight. They’ve given me absolutely everything. They came in at half time saying they felt like they had run ninety minutes, and we said you’ve got to run another ninety this 45, so they’ve done that for us and they thoroughly deserve what they got today.” Free entry to Park Ave for Town’s 1000th Cymru Premier match encouraged a bumper crowd of 883 to attend, a factor appreciated by Corbs and the Players: “It’s always nice to have a big crowd down here, for the players to experience what it’s like to have a full Park Avenue. It’s credit to the people who organised it tonight, so it’s so pleasing when you can go and get a result like this on such a special occasion.” Corbs also spoke with the FAW’s Callum Ellis and shared the following thoughts: “The boys were incredible. We said before the game that we weren’t going to let the occasion affect us, our mindset was on the game. We set up right, things went to plan and we are really pleased to get this victory on such a special occasion". Under pressure the Black and Greens’ young stars delivered, with the central defenders picked out for particular praise: “Our back three were immense tonight, I thought Leeroy, Bradders and Rhys followed their runners, dealt with everything and the rest of the boys, everyone put in a massive shift. For his goal, Sam has seen the opportunity and he’s taken the goal so well. He scored two versus Druids on Friday too so he’s in a good place at the moment and we’re very pleased for him.” Looking forward the Seasiders have a ten day break before travelling down to Pembrokeshire for the return fixture, away to Haverfordwest on Friday 11th February (ko 7.45pm), and Corbs is hoping the Green Army will travel in numbers to bring their traditional super away support on the night: “We’ve got the break but we’ll be in this weekend and on Tuesday, we’ll work hard again and prepare right for Haverfordwest away. It’s nice to put on a performance like that for the supporters and hopefully we’ll continue to get a little bit more support each week.” Seven more sleeps! |
