Friday 13th September Connah's Quay Nomads 4 Aberystwyth Town 1 An improved performance on the previous week was sadly not enough for the Black and Greens, for whom Friday 13th did prove unlucky, as they went down 4-1 away to Cymru Premier Vice Champions Connah's Quay Nomads. Callum Morris gave the hosts the lead with a 15th minute penalty, and Ryan Wignall doubled the lead 11 minutes later. Michael Bakare's third for Nomads was a killer for Town on 46 minutes, however just before the hour George Horan was red carded for a desperate last ditch challenge on Luke Boundford, and from then on, albeit with the game already lost, Aber dominated the game. Declan Poole scored a breakaway fourth on 86 minutes but then two minutes later Town got a well deserved consolation with Joe Phillips' back post header. On a pleasant Indian Summer of a Friday evening Bakare gave Aber an early warning sending in a left wing shot which Connor Roberts pushed out to Morris who tapped wide. Back came Aber and Captain Marc Williams caught a right wing cross at the back post, but his header miscued from 4 metres out. Some resolute defending later, Mike Wilde earned a soft pen for Nomads in the box, which Morris dispatched confidently for 1-0. Bakare was twice more denied by Roberts, then at the other end home keeper Lewis Brass fluffed a Ryan Edwards free kick, but the Nomads managed to clear. Adam Hughes sent in a nice cross which Williams headed wide and Aber looked bang in the game: however inevitably a long throw fell kindly for Wignall at the far post who buried his chance and doubled the lead. Tom Price fired wide after good work from Ryan Edwards, and then dispossessed Wignall to set up Williams, whose effort was blocked. Despite the scoreline Aber were playing well and making chances, with the home manager visibly unhappy with proceedings, despite the scoreline. Bakare set up Wilde who volleyed wide, and then Price again went close for Aber after good work from Luke Boundford and Williams. Wignall crossed for Bakare to fire wide and the half time scoreline was 2-0, which in truth was rather flattering for the home side. The next goal was huge for Aber and alas Bakare scored it two minutes after the restart, showing some nice skill to cut in from the left wing before smashing the ball high into the roof of the net. Jamie Insall saw a goal disallowed for offside but with the game won Quay sat back and Aber in truth dominated proceedings from then on in. Vaz had a shot saved by Brass and then just before the hour Boundford bustled his way in front of Horan, who hauled him down, and as the last man had to see red. The resulting free kick from Williams was punched wide by Brass, and the resultant corner almost lead to a goal, but the header squeaked wide. Aber sensed a half chance and with Price increasingly dominant in midfield the chances kept coming. Two Aber subs combined when Alex Boss reached the touchline and cut back for Joe Phillips to blast over, Ryan Wollacott had two shots blocked from a corner, and countless free kicks and corners were seen out by the home defence. Then with four minutes to go a rare breakaway from Quay saw Poole grab a hugely flattering fourth, only for Boss to set up Phillips again at the back post for a richly deserved consolation goal. There was still time for Boss to curl wide but the match ended with a scoreline of 4-1. Connah’s Quay play like a juggernaut, and three goals in half an hour were enough to win this game – and it was a deserved win. The scoreline however was not a fair reflection of play and Aber deserved so much more for talking the game to Connah’s Quay and creating chance after chance. Town need to tighten up their defensive work, and if they can do that then better days lay ahead. Next for the Black and Greens is Caernarfon Town at Park Avenue next Friday (ko 7.45pm). JD Cymru Premier Friday 13th September (ko 7.45pm) Connah’s Quay Nomads v Aberystwyth Town Aber Town look to bounce back from a disappointing performance last weekend and regain their Top Six spot with a positive result away to Cymru Premier Vice Champions Connah’s Quay Nomads on the evening of Friday 13th (ko 7.45pm). This game is viewed as one of the toughest on the fixture Calendar, but Aber can take heart from their last away match when they beat Cefn Druids by two goals to one fourteen days ago. Connah’s Quay themselves also managed a single goal victory over the Druids last night thanks to Priestly Farquharson’s goal. With six points from their opening five matches Aber sit in seventh place, level on points with sixth placed Caernarfon Town, so their destiny is still firmly in their own hands, and a good run in the Autumn could be inspired by a big result this weekend. Town’s forwards Marc Williams and Luke Boundford are bang in form, but Manager Matthew Bishop will be looking for a defensive improvement after losing 2-1 to Airbus last weekend. Geoff Kellaway, Tom Price and Joe Phillips all appeared from the bench and helped the Black and Greens to a strong finish on Saturday, so will be pushing for spots in Friday’s starting line up. Relentless Quay are of course formidable opposition, and they have made headlines already this season with notable results against Scottish opposition both in the UEFA Europa League and Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Cup. They currently lie fifth in the Cymru Premier, three points ahead of Aber after two wins and three draws. Aberystwyth narrowly lost 2-1 at Deeside Stadium in August 2018, and will be aiming to improve on that score this time around. Kick off at is at 7.45pm, and Deeside Stadium is on the main A548 through Connah's Quay on the left hand side travelling in the direction of Flint, inside the grounds of Coleg Cambria. The postcode is CH5 4BR. Be lucky on Friday 13th! Aberystwyth Town FC can announce three updates to our fixture Calendar for 2019. The Black and Greens' Nathaniel MG Cup Third Round Tie, away to Cup Holders Cardiff Met, will take place at the Cyncoed Campus on Tuesday 24th September, with a 7.45pm kick off. Town's JD Cymru Premier match away to Carmarthen Town FC at Richmond Park has been moved to Friday 18th October, to accommodate live TV coverage by Sgorio. The Seasiders' Cymru Premier match at home to Bala Town on Friday November 8th will also be broadcast live, meaning the match will now kick off at 8pm. Saturday 7th September Aberystwyth Town 1 Airbus UK Broughton 2 Aberystwyth Town’s up and down season continued with a 2-1 defeat at home to promoted Airbus UK Broughton. Kristian Platt opened the scoring for the visitors with a 16th minute free kick, and Andy Owens doubled the lead on 47 minutes. Luke Boundford reduced the arrears with 9 minutes remaining and despite a late spell of pressure from the Black and Greens, the Wingmakers held on for their first win of the season. The match was preceded by a minute’s silence for Club Legend Bryan Pugh Jones and on a pleasant afternoon the visitors started well, with a high press. A high tempo first phase was decided in Airbus’ favour when the gangly Owens won a free kick 30 yards out, and Platt’s free kick flew into the far corner to give Airbus a deserved lead. Owens was played through and skewed wide from a good position before Aber attacked with a dangerous Boundford cross being caught by visiting keeper Dave Roberts. Alex Darlington was denied by Connor Roberts in Aber’s goal and then Wes Baynes’ ball in just evaded Matthew Jones. Paulo Mendes’ back post header from a Boundford cross was held by Roberts, and Baynes saw a shot deflected wide as Aber tried to respond, but then Darlington missed a great chance from the edge of the area to double the lead. The impressive Airbus left wing back Curtis Strong then played in Owens but a superb last ditch tackle from Stuart Jones denied Airbus a two goal lead, and with Wollacott then Jones making further headed clearances Airbus were certainly good value for their half time lead. Any thoughts of a second half comeback were dashed when Ryan Edwards crossed for the irrepressible Owens to claim Airbus’ second just two minutes after the break, and Aber were really up against it. Baynes’ cross was caught by Roberts, and Boundford scooped wide, before Owens drew a save from Roberts at the other end. Aber’s Ryan Edwards then had a shot deflected wide for a corner, before Owens once again went close for Airbus. Platt tested Connor Roberts’ hands with another goalbound free kick, before Baynes picked out Stuart Jones with a free kick, but his header went wide. Owens was denied by Roberts yet again from point blank range with a brilliant save, but then credit to Aber who ended the game strongly. Adam Hughes sent in a great delivery from the left wing which Cymru Premier Top Goalscorer Marc Williams glanced wide, but his next ball in was more successful, causing defensive consternation which saw Boundford net at his second attempt. Belief was growing that Town might gran an unlikely point: but their best chance came and went when Ryan Edwards sent in a free kick for Stuart Jones to head agonisingly wide, and Airbus held on for what on the balance of play was a deserved three points. This has to go down as a disappointing home performance from Aber and despite a late flurry the result didn’t look in doubt for long periods. Today’s match showed, if it was ever doubted, that there are no mugs in this season’s Cymru Premier League, and Matthew Bishop’s Black and Greens will be hoping for better fortunes on Friday evening as they travel North to face Connah’s Quay Nomads (ko 7.45pm). JD Cymru Premier Saturday 7th September (ko 2.30pm) Aberystwyth Town v Airbus UK Broughton Aberystwyth Town host their first Saturday match of the season in two days time – and do so with an added spring in their step following an excellent 2-1 away win at Cefn Druids six days ago. Aber certainly went through it last week, with inquests happening left, right and centre following the heavy August Bank Holiday defeat at home to The New Saints. Town’s next match was always likely to be viewed as a season defining game, and, cheered on by a superbly loyal away support of over 35 Black and Greens fans, Aber passed the test thanks to Marc Williams’ stunner, and Geoff Kellaway’s dramatic 87th minute winner. A significant win saw Matthew Bishop’s men finishing a tumultuous week in the Top Six! The challenge now is to kick on and cement the side’s Championship Conference berth – but Saturday’s match is a dangerous game for Aberystwyth. Cymru Alliance Champions Airbus have performed well in all four of their Cymru Premier opening games, losing narrowly on each occasion. They are certain to pick up points at some stage before long, and Aber will know that unless they are on their game, that could happen on Saturday. Airbus’ Squad has a number of faces familiar to seasoned Welsh Prem followers, and with onetime Black and Green Dave Roberts in goal, they have a connection to Park Avenue too. Town will be boosted by the Deadline Day signing of Swansea City loanee Tom Price, and he will go straight into Aber’s squad as number 21. The Match will be preceded by a minute's silence for Club Legend Bryan Pugh-Jones, who sadly passed away last week. Admission for this JD Cymru Premier clash will cost £7 for Adults, £4 for Concessions and just £1 for Kids. Consider yourself invited! Sunday 1st September 2019
Welsh Premier Women’s League Cup Group Stage Port Talbot Town Ladies 3 Aberystwyth Town Ladies 0 First half strikes from Coryn Sexton, Courteney Thomas and a second half goal from Jessica Curran meant Aber left South Wales empty handed in their tough season opener at Port Talbot. Andy Evans and Ray Hughes’ side were aware promotion was going to mean a giant step up: facing a team that finished fourth in the league behind Cardiff Met, Swansea and Cardiff was always going to be a difficult fixture, and from the off this was clear. The hosts dominated the opening stages and opened the scoring on twelve minutes when Coryn Sexton pounced quickly to poke the ball in from the edge of the six-yard box. Port Talbot nearly doubled their lead soon after but a powerful strike was denied by a fantastic low save by Aber’s Ffion Ashman. Cat Davies nearly levelled the scores following Ashman’s long ball out but the forward was unable to get the contact on the ball she would have liked. On 21 minutes the lead was doubled: a corner was met by Courteney Thomas and a left-footed volley from close range to give Port Talbot some breathing space and a two goal lead at half time. The Black and Greens shot out of the blocks in the second half though and just seconds in nearly pulled a goal back. A deflected ball along the six-yard area following good work from Tania Wylde was nearly turned in by Davies but the forward’s slide was just a little too late. Wylde then saw her powerful and well-hit strike go not too far over the bar as the visitors pushed for a goal to get back in the game. The hosts were still having their own chances though and were denied by yet another top-save by Ashman and then a clearance off the line by Ffiona Evans. The South Wales team however weren’t to be denied for too much long with a third being scored in rather fortunate circumstances. Evans with another good block which the hit the back of an opposition player and straight to Jessica Curran who was able to head home from fairly close-range. Despite the result there were a lot of positives the Mid Wales side can take from this game going forward as they learn to adapt to the huge step up. Due to Rhyl Ladies’ withdrawal from the league, Aber will not be in action this coming Sunday and will continue WPWL Cup campaign on Sunday 15th September at home to last years’ champions Cardiff Met who have recently returned from a record-breaking performance in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
