Friday 13th September Connah's Quay Nomads 4 Aberystwyth Town 1 An improved performance on the previous week was sadly not enough for the Black and Greens, for whom Friday 13th did prove unlucky, as they went down 4-1 away to Cymru Premier Vice Champions Connah's Quay Nomads. Callum Morris gave the hosts the lead with a 15th minute penalty, and Ryan Wignall doubled the lead 11 minutes later. Michael Bakare's third for Nomads was a killer for Town on 46 minutes, however just before the hour George Horan was red carded for a desperate last ditch challenge on Luke Boundford, and from then on, albeit with the game already lost, Aber dominated the game. Declan Poole scored a breakaway fourth on 86 minutes but then two minutes later Town got a well deserved consolation with Joe Phillips' back post header. On a pleasant Indian Summer of a Friday evening Bakare gave Aber an early warning sending in a left wing shot which Connor Roberts pushed out to Morris who tapped wide. Back came Aber and Captain Marc Williams caught a right wing cross at the back post, but his header miscued from 4 metres out. Some resolute defending later, Mike Wilde earned a soft pen for Nomads in the box, which Morris dispatched confidently for 1-0. Bakare was twice more denied by Roberts, then at the other end home keeper Lewis Brass fluffed a Ryan Edwards free kick, but the Nomads managed to clear. Adam Hughes sent in a nice cross which Williams headed wide and Aber looked bang in the game: however inevitably a long throw fell kindly for Wignall at the far post who buried his chance and doubled the lead. Tom Price fired wide after good work from Ryan Edwards, and then dispossessed Wignall to set up Williams, whose effort was blocked. Despite the scoreline Aber were playing well and making chances, with the home manager visibly unhappy with proceedings, despite the scoreline. Bakare set up Wilde who volleyed wide, and then Price again went close for Aber after good work from Luke Boundford and Williams. Wignall crossed for Bakare to fire wide and the half time scoreline was 2-0, which in truth was rather flattering for the home side. The next goal was huge for Aber and alas Bakare scored it two minutes after the restart, showing some nice skill to cut in from the left wing before smashing the ball high into the roof of the net. Jamie Insall saw a goal disallowed for offside but with the game won Quay sat back and Aber in truth dominated proceedings from then on in. Vaz had a shot saved by Brass and then just before the hour Boundford bustled his way in front of Horan, who hauled him down, and as the last man had to see red. The resulting free kick from Williams was punched wide by Brass, and the resultant corner almost lead to a goal, but the header squeaked wide. Aber sensed a half chance and with Price increasingly dominant in midfield the chances kept coming. Two Aber subs combined when Alex Boss reached the touchline and cut back for Joe Phillips to blast over, Ryan Wollacott had two shots blocked from a corner, and countless free kicks and corners were seen out by the home defence. Then with four minutes to go a rare breakaway from Quay saw Poole grab a hugely flattering fourth, only for Boss to set up Phillips again at the back post for a richly deserved consolation goal. There was still time for Boss to curl wide but the match ended with a scoreline of 4-1. Connah’s Quay play like a juggernaut, and three goals in half an hour were enough to win this game – and it was a deserved win. The scoreline however was not a fair reflection of play and Aber deserved so much more for talking the game to Connah’s Quay and creating chance after chance. Town need to tighten up their defensive work, and if they can do that then better days lay ahead. Next for the Black and Greens is Caernarfon Town at Park Avenue next Friday (ko 7.45pm).
