Aberystwyth Town vs Connahs Quay Nomads
JD Cymru Premier Friday 16th September 8pm KO After last weeks trip to Flint was postponed due to the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, ATFC are back in action this Friday and back at Aberystwyth University Park Avenue Stadium, with Connahs Quay Nomads the visitors to Ceredigion. As always, Nomads will provide stern opposition and they come into this match having put together back-to-back league victories for the first time this season in their previous two matches, against Penybont and Bala Town. They have an overall record of 3 victories and 2 defeats from their opening 5 games this season and also progressed to the 2nd round of the Nathaniel MG Cup having beaten The New Saints on penalties in Round 1. The visitors are now managed by Neil Gibson, who took over at Deeside Stadium on the eve of the new season following Craig Harrison’s departure for The New Saints. Gibson had previously served as Assistant to Andy Morrison at Nomads back in 2018 and returns to the club after a strong 18 months at Flint Town United. Another returnee from Flint Town United this summer was legendary Cymru Premier striker Michael Wilde, who has already notched two goals back on Deeside – taking him back to a familiar position as Nomads top scorer for the season so far. There will be a couple of familiar faces in the Nomads squad tomorrow night. Harry Franklin was arguably ATFC’s stand-out performer during his 18 months at Park Avenue before departing in the summer, whilst Paulo Mendes was an influential figure for two years before departing Ceredigion following the curtailment of the Covid affected 2019/20 season. Admission prices at Aberystwyth University Park Avenue Stadium this season are £8 for Adults, £5 for Concessions / Students, £2 for Secondary School age children and free entry for Primary School age children. JD Cymru Premier Friday 9th September 7.45pm KO Aberystwyth Town travel to North East Wales tomorrow night hoping to replicate the result from the teams last visit to this part of the country – the opening day win at Airbus UK Broughton. Results have not gone Aber’s way since that victory but having had a full week since last Friday’s home match with Bala Town, the Seasiders will come into this game refreshed, reinvigorated and looking to get back to winning ways. Tomorrow nights hosts have had a strong start to the season and currently sit in 4th position after 5 games, with 3 wins and 9 points on their record, including an impressive 2-0 victory at UEFA Europa Conference League entrants Newtown. Lee Fowler took over the reigns at the Essity Stadium this summer and has refreshed the squad, bringing in the likes of former Tranmere & Shrewsbury forward Jean-Louis Akpa-Akpro, former Bala Town defender Anthony Stephens and one time Man Utd prospect Larnell Cole. Another new signing, Okera Simmonds, has really caught the eye having netted 3 times already this season – a return only bettered in the league by Cardiff Met’s Sam Jones and Penybont’s Rhys Kavanagh at this stage. This will be the first time that they have played on home turf this season, following the installation of a new 3G pitch at the Essity Stadium. There will also be a new fan zone and catering facility at the ground, which will no doubt improve the matchday experience for home and away fans alike. Flint Town United’s website offers the following advice on travel to The Essity Stadium. The stadium sits on the banks of the Dee Estuary, a short walk away from Flint Castle. You’ll find a car park near the RNLI Lifeboat Station. Once that fills up, we ask you to be respectful about where you park. Try to consider those living locally and avoid blocking any driveways, streets or access roads. If you can, come on foot or on the train. It’ll make your journey home easier and give you some eco-credentials too. Tickets are priced at £8 for Adults, £5 for Seniors, £2 for Juniors and U11’s are free. Tickets can be purchased in advance on https://flinttownunited.co.uk/. Green Army … assemble! Friday 2nd September Aberystwyth Town 1 Bala Town 4 Aber Town suffered a third straight home defeat to Cymru Prem runners up Bala Town, who played the majority of the game with ten men after Chris Venables’ early dismissal. Kieran Smith (22 mins) and Nathan Peate (57 mins) netted for the Lakesiders, before a Jack Rimmer own goal (68 mins) and Dave Edwards’ penalty (76 mins) compounded the hosts misery. Some scant consolation was provided by Jonathan Evans’ late penalty (85 mins) but this was a disappointing night for the Black and Greens. Louis Bradford and Alex Darlington returned to the starting eleven, but both teams’ game plans swung dramatically in the second minute when Venables was adjudged to have elbowed Rimmer, and was shown a shock straight red. Bala however coped well and the dangerous Lassana Mendes sent in an early free kick which was easily gathered by Lewis Webb in the Aber goal, before George Newell flicked a header wide. For the Seasiders Charley Edge sent in a dangerous ball from the left which just evaded Steff Davies but overall Bala were on top, and halfway through the half Smith nodded home Mendes’ corner at the near post to give them a vital lead. Aber were trying to play the ball out of the back but were struggling to create chances against a resolute defence. Callum Woods had a shot parried to safety, then back came Aber as Davies found space down the right and crossed for Niall Flint whose attempt flew agonisingly wide. Jack Thorn’s long throw was flicked on to Flint at the back post, but he couldn’t convert, and then Edwards’ free kick was saved by Webb, and Bala were good value for their half time lead. The second goal in this match was likely to be crucial and Davies headed wide from Edge’s cross for Aber early on. Bala defended free kicks and set pieces well and then Mendes dribbled through but had his low shot gathered by Webb. Ollie Shannon had a shot blocked for a corner, and Mendes’ ball in was headed home at the back post by Peate for a killer second. The Black and Greens tried to respond with Davies again denied by Alex Ramsey from Sam Litchfield’s ball in, and then Newell beat the offside trap down the right and his dangerous cross was deflected into his own net by Rimmer. Back came Aber again and Louis Bradford had an attempt cleared off the line, before seeing another shot deflected for a corner, which Litchfield headed over at the back post. Mendes was then fouled in the area and experienced Edwards notched Bala’s fourth from the spot. Sub Adam Roscrow had a shot saved by Webb but then Peate blocked Davies in Bala’s box, and Jonathan Evans blasted home a penalty as a note of defiance. Aber had some late pressure which lead to nothing and the game ended in a comprehensive win for the visitors. Once again it proved not to be Aber’s night, and Manager Anthony Williams and his squad will work hard to create an improved response next week, as the Black and Greens travel to Flint on Friday evening for a 7.45pm kick off. The match will be the hosts inaugural match on their new 3G pitch so promises to be quite an occasion. Your support would be appreciated. |
