Dafabet Welsh Premier League Saturday 16th April (ko 2.30pm) Carmarthen Town v Aberystwyth Town Aber Town's excellent end of season run will again be put to the test on Saturday when they visit Play Off Conference rivals Carmarthen Town at Parc Waundew, for their final away match of the regular season. Wyn Thomas has presided over an upturn in results since the January split and Aber have won five and drawn two of their eight fixtures in the Play Off Conference. Their only defeat was a costly 4-2 reverse at home to Carmarthen in February, which Town will be aiming to revenge on Saturday to stay in the race for a seventh place finish which guarantees a UEFA Europa League Play Off spot. Carmarthen have also been in great form since the split and have equalled the Black and Greens' seventeen points haul, with ex-Aber striker Mark Jones' return to the side a significant feature of that upturn in form. The Orangemen will however have defenders Craig Hanford and Jordan Knott suspended, both having received bans in the past week. Wyn Thomas' squad has a clean bill of health, and an in form squad to choose from with Craig Williams and Rhys Griffiths both catching the eye of late. Chris Venables now equals Tony Gray's seventeen goal haul at the top of the race for the WPL Golden Boot and with effervescent midfielder Luke Sherbon gradually returning to fitness, things are looking up for the Seasiders. If they can keep their positive run of results going there could be a very exciting end to the season in May. The Coach leaves Park Avenue at 11am and a return trip to Carmarthen will cost just £10 for Adults and £5 Concessions. We look forward to seeing you there and then! With 180 minutes of football left to play in the regular season, Aberystwyth Town find themselves in an excellent position to make a charge at the Europa League Playoffs, writes Club Media Assistant Matthew Wallace. With near rivals Bangor and Carmarthen drawing against one another, the Black and Greens gained three crucial points on Friday night to beautifully set the scene ahead of two massive games against their near rivals in the coming weeks. Craig Williams opened the scoring with a sumptuous lob with the game just ten minutes old before Luke Borelli levelled the scores for the visitors. But thanks to goals from leading marksman Chris Venables and an own goal following a powerful header from striker Rhys Griffiths, the Seasiders earned a hard fought 3-1 victory to set themselves up for the next two crucial fixtures. “It was an important three points for us. The performance wasn’t the greatest, the pitch wasn’t the greatest and didn’t help the way we want to play but in the end we scored goals in important parts of the game and it’s the three points that’s important at this stage of the season.”Interim boss Wyn Thomas told Aberystwyth Town's Youtube Channel after the match. “We had a great start with the goal but we’ve taken our foot off the gas which was disappointing. But we came out better in the second half. Venables got his goal, Williams worked hard and we’ve won the game in the second half.” Despite occupying the relegation spots, the visitors Haverfordwest provided Town with a tough test. Having already defeated Aber at Park Avenue once this season, the Bluebirds showed plenty of heart, commitment and desire to provide Wyn Thomas’ men with a stern challenge. “Haverfordwest are a very good side. They didn’t give up and dug in right the way to the end. They’ve had a good season. They work hard for one another and that was evident again tonight. Despite losing four consecutive matches before the mid season split, Aber are hitting form at the right time having won five and lost only one game in eight since January. This upturn in form is something that Thomas attests to the work rate and attitude of the squad at his disposal. “We’re on a good run. The boys are playing well. They’re there every week for training and for games. They’re all eager and hungry to play. They deserve a lot, a lot of credit. They’re working hard, doing that bit extra. People want to play and want to get into the starting eleven. There is competition and that’s great. It’s important to keep this run going now and put the pressure back on the other sides.” Next up for Aber is a game against Carmarthen at Richmond Park next Saturday. With the Old Gold picking up a crucial last minute equiliser yesterday at Bangor, they will be heading into the game full of confidence. However, Thomas is aware of the challenges that lie ahead and is confident that his men can get the result. “We’ve got two massive games to come now but we’ll concentrate on the next one first. Carmarthen away next Saturday is going to be tight. We know it’s going to be close and it’ll be decided on who turns up on the day.” Watch the full interview with Wyn Thomas on Aber Town's Youtube Channel here. Aberystwyth Town FC will be hosting their annual Family Fun Day on Saturday 23rd April, and we hope to see you there! The free annual event is a highpoint of the Club's work with the Community, and traditionally attracts between 250-300 additional supporters through the gate for a high profile Dafabet Welsh Premier League match. The home game with Bangor City on Saturday, April 23rd will be Aber's last ever league match on the Park Avenue turf before the Club's new 3G pitch is laid, and with the Black and Greens currently on a good run of results, it could well be a UEFA Europa League Play Off decider. The Family Fun Day will consist of a number of activites around the ground to entertain and amuse supporters of all ages, but particularly children and families. Penalty shoots out with our Club Mascot Sami the Seagull have proven very popular in the past, as have informal Football Coaching Sessions ran on the Astroturf behind the Main Stand, which will also host a bouncy castle (weather permitting!). Behind the scenes Guided Tours of Park Avenue Stadium are also on offer, bringing out the stories created by the Club's 85 years continuous use of the ground, while the John Charles Lounge hosts quizzes, face painting and Xbox games to keep everyone entertained. As an added extra this year the wonderful Borth Animalarium will be our Special Guests for the day! This all acts as a build up to the Main Event, a Dafabet Welsh Premier League match against Bangor City, and those attending the Family Fun Day are of course allowed to remain within the ground free of charge to watch it. The kick off time for this game is at 5.15pm and the Family Fun Day begins at 2pm. Please keep an eye on Town's website atfc.org.uk, twitter @aberystwythtown, Youtube Channel, "Green Army" Facebook page or the local press for more details closer to the event. Kermit the Frog sang that it was not easy being green, but the way our Black and Greens are playing at the moment, we at Aberystwyth Town beg to differ. Consider yourself invited on April 23rd and we look forward to meeting you and your family! Dafabet Welsh Premier League
Friday 8th April Aberystwyth Town 3 Haverfordwest County 1 Aber Town returned to the summit of the Dafabet WPL Play Off Conference this evening with a very important 3-1 home win over already relegated Haverfordwest County. Man of the Match Craig Williams opened the scoring for Aber on 10 minutes, only for Luke Borelli to level the scores six minutes later. The Black and Greens improved after the break and Williams created the chance for Chris Venables to lob a second on the hour, before sending in a corner which Rhys Griffiths headed goalbound, for Sean Pemberton to complete the scoring with a headed own goal on 71 minutes. On a drizzly night a pre match Club Photo ensured a decent turnout of 404, and a lively Friday night atmosphere at Park Avenue. Visitors Haverfordwest created the first chance when Borelli's ball in from the left fell for stand in centre forward Sean Pemberton, but he could only tap it back to Mike Lewis in Aber's goal. Another Borelli cross was gathered by Lewis, but then came the first moment of real quality when Geoff Kellaway picked out Craig Williams out on the left, and the Taff's Well Touchline Terror hit a sumptuous lob first time over Craig Morris' head to open the scoring: a brilliant strike. Chris Venables tried another lob minutes later, but then the visitors equalised when the impressive Greg Walters managed to pick out Borelli at the back stick, and he tapped home. Pemberton headed wide again, Kellaway had a flick saved as did Borelli, and then Ross Stephens picked out Venables at the back post, but he headed inches wide, and a generally disappointing first half ended 1-1. The second half started with the visitors creating most of the chances, with Pemberton having a low shot saved, and heading wide, but then on the hour the game turned when Williams cut inside from the left after a positive run and his low shot brought a save from Morris which spooned the ball into the air, and Venables managed to hook the ball over the goalkeeper to score with an instinctive lob which brought his season tally to 17, back on top of the Golden Boot List. With the Dias Stand dancing, Rhys Griffiths released Kellaway through with a deft touch, and his shot was parried inches wide by Morris, but then the killer third came when Williams' corner from the left was perfect for Griffiths to direct a strong header goalbound, which deflected in off the unfortunate Pemberton's head. Aber still had some defending to do, with Stephens, Lee Surman and Antonio Corbisiero making crucial blocks to defend their lead. Walters curled an effort wide, and then late on sub Liam Jaques set up Williams for another blocked effort, and the game ended at 3-1: a testament to Wyn Thomas and his Players' desire to get a result when it really mattered. This precious victory keeps Aber right in the running for the UEFA Europa League Play Offs, and with seventeen points garnered from their eight post split game to date, the Black and Greens can confidently look forward to another important clash at Carmarthen Town next Saturday afternoon (ko 2.30pm). Aberystwyth Town FC are delighted to confirm that the FAW's First Instance Body has awarded the Club the UEFA and Domestic Licences required to compete in the UEFA Europa and Dafabet Welsh Premier Leagues for 2016/7. Club Licensing Officer Thomas Crockett said: "These licences are a great achievement for any volunteer-run Football Club, and they accredit the thousands of hours of unpaid work put into administering our Club each year. " "I'd like to place on record my thanks to a few people who put in a lot of work behind the scenes necessary to achieve these licences, namely Club Chairman Tony Bates, Vice Chairman David "Dai Caprice" Evans, Secretary Emyr James, Academy Secretary Russell Hughes-Pickering and Doctor Richard Edwards." The Club therefore retains its unique and proud record of achieving both licences at the first attempt on every single occasion since the FAW introduced the Licensing process in 2004/5. |
