Dafabet Welsh Premier League
Sunday 18th September Gap Connah’s Quay 4 Aberystwyth Town 0 Goals from Matty Williams, Shelton Payne and two headers from Black and Greens’ bête noire Les Davies consigned Aber to another heavy defeat at the Deeside Stadium this afternoon. Despite the eventual result the Black and Greens defended fairly well in the first half, restricting the hosts to two shots on target in a scrappy game. Les Davies had a shot kicked off the line by Dominic Richards and John Disney headed past the post, while at the other end Ryan Wollacott glanced a dangerous header wide from Chris Jones’ free kick delivery. Then in the 20th minute an innocuous ball into the area from Quay’s right flank fell for Williams to notch a messy opener. Town threatened a response when Kostya Georgievsky surged down the right wing but couldn’t quite find Luke Borrelli with his cross. Tom Field sent in a cross that Nathan Woolfe headed wide for the Nomads and then Kurtis March’s through ball just evaded Geoff Kellaway. Williams saw a back post header bounce off the crossbar but with the hosts restricted to two attempts on target Aber went into the break still in the game at 1-0. All hopes of a comeback evaporated two minutes into the second half when Field’s deep cross was headed home by Davies at the back post for Quay’s second, and the game opened up. Chris Jones flashed a rasping shot past the post for the visitors, then Field went close with a free kick. Town’s Sam Rodon got a header in on goal from Jones’ free kick but John Danby was not greatly worried, before the salfsame Jones gathered the ball in central midfield and again fizzed a shot wide from 25 yards out. Davies found the roof of the net with another header for Quay and then sub Shelton Payne’s first touch provided the best moment of the game as he cut onto his left foot out on the right and curled a pearler past Richards for a third on 68 minutes. Chris Jones brought a save out of Danby with a third long range effort and March sent a free kick over the bar, and at the other end Richards denied Field with a smart stop. Following a break in play brought about by a faulty corner flag Les Davies headed the fourth from a deep free kick on 89 minutes, and a difficult afternoon for Aberystwyth Town ended at 4-0. The Black and Greens will not have much time to lick their wounds with an away Dafabet Welsh Premier League match at Carmarthen Town on Tuesday evening (ko 7.45pm).
