Friday 16th December Cefn Druids 0 Aberystwyth Town 3 Aberystwyth Town pulled out a big performance at a vital time of the season to earn a crucial three points at The Rock this evening, as a strong defensive display allied to impressive strikes from Geoff Kellaway, Luke Borrelli and Kostya Georgievsky earned all three points. The game started out with both sides trying to play the ball around on the excellent 3g surface, and Aber showing some nice touches without quite breaking through. Borrelli picked out Kurtis March who brought a first save of the game from Mike Jones, but then on the quarter hour a sweet touch from Joe Clarke on the edge of the area picked out Kellaway, who slotted the ball into the bottom right corner of the goal for the perfect start. Jones was then out quickly to deny Chris Jones, and then March was denied by the keeper again who redeemed himself for an earlier error. Druids had mostly threatened from long throws and corners, but on 22 minutes Steve Blenkinsop was fouled in the area and a penalty was awarded to the hosts. Time for ex Druids Legend Chris Mullock to break his old club’s heart as he pulled off a superb left handed save to deny Mike Pritchard and prevent a significant swing in the game’s momentum. The Druids kept pressing and although Aber’s Will Bell was looking confident, heading clear time after time, marvellous Mullock had to make further saves to deny Fisnik Hajdari, Naim Arsan and Stuart Cook and protect the lead. Aber remained a threat on the break but ended the half glad to be in the lead after surviving a good spell from the hosts. Druids went close with a far post header just after the break but down the other end Kellaway narrowly missed the target with a cute effort and the scene was set for an entertaining but nervy 45. Dogged defending from Aber prevented too many clear cut chances with Dan Alfei looking assured and Luke Sherbon creating a permanent shield in front of the back four. Mullock then blocked Pritchard again in a one on one before Cook fired wide. A break in play saw Aber subs Georgievsky and Blake Davies get their chance and Davies almost played in the hard working Borrelli with an early cross. With Druids shots going askew, the scene was set for Aber to put the game to bed and on 79 minutes a beautiful dinked ball from Luke Sherbon played in Borrelli, who went on to delight his team mates by scoring low under Jones for a goal of huge significance, earned after a night of tireless pressing and harrying from the lone front man. Mullock pulled off yet another great left handed save to deny Corey Roper, and stopped Kyle Parle’s effort for good measure with the game entering four minutes of injury time. Then in the last of those minutes Georgievsky was picked out by a great crossfield ball from Alfei and the Swansea super sub darted down the left wing before hitting the far corner of the net with a stunning rising drive which put the icing on the cake. This victory, earned on the foundations of a performance full of defensive grit and desire, could yet prove to be hugely significant in Aber’s season, and sets up Tuesday night’s Dafabet WPL match at home to Bangor City beautifully.
