Corbettsports Welsh Premier League Saturday 21st March (ko 2.30pm) Newtown v Aberystwyth Town Aberystwyth Town go into Saturday's Mid Wales derby at Paveways Latham Park knowing that they are fully in control of their destiny come the end of the season. Standing just two points shy of second place, and with both main rivals facing daunting trips to Fortress Park Avenue before the seasons end, Town now know that five wins from five games will guarantee them a best ever WPL season and a UEFA Europa League ticket. The first of those five games comes on Saturday against Welsh Cup Semi Finalists Newtown, who won 6-3 at Latham Park on a bad day at the office for Aber in October, though Town took revenge with subsequent 1-0 and 3-2 wins at Park Avenue more recently. Town will be buoyed by the return of the Phenomenon that is Chris Venables, and they will need all his nous to prevail against a side who - especially at home - have gained excellent results against even the Top Sides this season. Manager Ian Hughes was keen to praise the superb atmosphere created by the Black and Green Army on Friday night, and large numbers of Town Supporters are expected to converge on Latham Park on Saturday. Three points on Saturday, coupled with a Port Talbot defeat at home to Champions TNS would in any case guarantee a Top Four finish for the Black and Greens - which in itself would be a magnificent achievement for a side competing in the Championship Conference for the first time. However, having spent the majority of the season near the Top of the League Ian Hughes' men have earned the right to aspire for an even higher finish come April 26th. You can aspire with them by joining the Green Army on Saturday: the Coach leaves Park Avenue at 11.45am. Comments are closed.
