Central Wales FA Womens Cup Final Friday 28th April (at Llanidloes Town) Aberystwyth Town Ladies 2 Llanfair United Ladies 1 Aber Town's Ladies side made up for a disappointing final few months of the league season when they lifted the Central Wales Cup for the fifth time on the trot, beating Llanfair United by two goals to one at Llanidloes, writes Ffiona Evans. The greens who faced Llanfair for the second time in succession in the final, clinched the outcome with a late goal from Tania Wylde but they were forced to work very hard in the closing stages to keep the opposition out. With the pitch creating very difficult conditions both teams took time to get used to the bounce of the ball but it was Aber who were the first to take settle when from a corner in the 7th minute, taken by Mared Jones, fell to Lucy Hughes, who whipped a powerful cross into the box which took a deflection into the goal for the lead. Further chances fell to Tania Wylde and Helen Evans but the opposition keeper protected the goal well and kept them out but at the other end and after some good pressure from the Llanfair attack, they grabbed the equaliser they deserved. In reply Lucy Hughes again put another great cross into the box on to the head of Ffiona Evans but she was unable to get enough power to put the ball away just before half time. Within the first minute of the re start Aber created a great chance to go ahead when Wylde played the ball into Ffion Wyn Roberts for a one on one against the keeper, who made a super save to keep it all square. Helen Evans then went very close soon after when she volleyed the ball back towards the opposition goal straight from their goal kick. However, with just 15 minutes remaining, the ball fell kindly to Wylde following a defensive clearance and she powered her through the defence and slotted past the keeper to make it 2-1 to the Black and Greens. Aber Ladies were not yet finished with Helen Evans going close but her shot just brushed the crossbar whilst at the other end Llanfair did not give up and in the dying minutes Aber keeper Katie Christopher had to make a superb save to keep the game from going into extra time and the Ceredigion side held on for the victory they deserved. Following their Cup Triumph Aber Town Ladies will be recruiting for new players in pre-season and if you are interested in joining the team for the 2017-18 season, please email [email protected].
