Aber Town Ladies continued their pre-season preparation on Sunday by impressing in a very competitive 7-a-side tournament at Newtown’s Latham Park writes Steven Brookes. Aber Ladies have only had 2 training sessions so far this season and were already looking forward to being back playing competitive football again after the summer break. In Sunday's tournament the teams were split into 2 groups, each team in the group playing each other once and Aber began the day with a 3-0 victory against Tregaron Blues. Tania Wylde opened the scoring for Aber in the first half with a low shot into the bottom corner. In an improved second half that Aber dominated, Steph Land doubled the lead and Ffiona Evans scored the third and final goal from a tight angle. Up next was Caernarfon who are now playing in the Welsh Women’s Premier League. The match may have finished 0-0 but on another day Aber could have scored multiple goals. The Greens were denied by the post twice whilst the Caernarfon goalkeeper made numerous impressive saves. Aber were then back to winning ways with a 3-1 victory against Llanfair. An unfortunate own goal from Ffiona Evans put the Llanfair Ladies team ahead but a goal just before half time from Helen Evans levelled the scores before the break. Wylde then doubled her goal tally for the day but the goal of the match and possibly the day was by the impressive Steph Land who spotted the goalkeeper off her line and managed to lob the ball over the keeper and into the back of the net. The Greens followed this up with an impressive 4-0 victory against Llandrindod Wells. Aber dominated the game straight from kick off. ‘Landy’ was on the scoresheet again and so was Ffiona Evans with a great volley at the back post. Tania Wylde then made it three before half time. Helen Evans made it four in the second half to complete a superb victory and performance from the Ladies Team. Aber’s final match was against a very good TNS side. TNS started the better team and got the opening goal. Wylde was causing the TNS team problems and eventually levelled the scores just after the break. Aberystwyth Ladies Keeper Katie Christopher made some important saves in goal but a controversial second from TNS put them 2-1 ahead. Steph Land nearly got a second for the team in Black and Green but her overhead kick went narrowly wide of the post. Aber were unable to find an equaliser and it unfortunately meant they failed to qualify for the final stages on goal difference. The Greens would be right to feel very proud of their performances today and will probably feel they deserved to go further in the competition. Aberystwyth Ladies will now turn their focus back to the 11 aside matches with many Pre Season Friendlies coming up soon as well as the new league season. Comments are closed.
