Dafabet Welsh Premier
Saturday 10th September Aberystwyth Town 0 Carmarthen Town 3 An own goal from Aber's Will Bell (12 minutes), and further strikes from Kieran Lewis (64 minutes) and Liam Thomas (71 minutes) consigned Aber to defeat at Latham Park this afternoon. Onm a sunny afternoon in Newtown, Aber started purposefully with Luke Borrelli threatening with an early strike off target. Joe Clarke tested Lee Idzi with a long range lob and at the other end Kieron Lewis' corner was headed wide by ex Aber striker Mark Jones. The visitors were then gifted an early lead when a cross from the right was headed into his own net by the unfortunate Bell, and the game swung in Carmarthen's favour. They went on to dominate the next period with Lewis Harling bringing a great save out of Dominic Richards, Dave Vincent testing his handiowork with a header and Declan Carroll going close. Geoff Kellaway was trying to create openings with his running but there was precious little room in midfield for Aber to develop more than half chances. A late rally from Aber saw Kurtis March sending a shot just wide, Sam Rodon heading wide from a Chris Jones corner, Kellaway flashing a shot wide and Rodon being denied by a goal line clearance, but for their disciplined performance Carmarthen deserved the lead at half time. The hosts threatened again early in the second half with cross after cross being fired into the Carmarthen box, but to no avail. Bell headed over from another Jones corner, as did Rodon from a subsequent set piece. Meanwhile at the other end a great save from Richards denied Carroll, then back came Aber with Kellaway setting up Blake Davies and Borrelli also threatening the visitors' keeper. However streetwise Carmarthen killed the game twenty minutes in when Mark Jones slid Lewis down the right flank ,and he finished confidently for 2-0. Aber were really up against it now but still they kept coming with Kellaway having a shot deflected for a corner, and Davies drawing a save from Idzi. Then came the killer blow as Jones ran to the touchline and pulled the ball back for Liam Thomas to score Carmarthen's third, and the Black and Greens' misery was complete. Late chances for Bell and Joe Clarke could not mask a very disappointing performance and result for Aberystwyth Town. Town Manager Matthew Bishop will be looking for a response next weekend as Aber travel North once more to face Gap Connah's Quay on Sunday 18th September, with a 3pm kick off. Comments are closed.
