Aberystwyth Town Ladies 4 Newcastle Emlyn Ladies 0
Aberystwyth Ladies earned their first win of the season on Sunday against local rivals Newcastle Emlyn Ladies. It was a bottom of the table clash with both teams searching for their first points to kick start their season.
Aber started well and applied pressure on the Emlyn defence early on. Chances from Gabi Hughes, Annalee Hudson and Naomi Evans saw Emlyn’s keeper Kirsty Fisher make good saves to keep it goalless. A corner taken by N.Evans saw the ball land to Sian Evans, with her shot going inches wide of the post. It was in 34th minute that Hughes managed to slot the ball coolly past the keeper to break the deadlock. Further chances came with Amy Jenkins hitting the post where the rebound fell for Ffiona Evans to shoot over. Emlyn gained a free kick deep in Aber’s half just before half time when Angharad Jenkins’s ball went just over the crossbar. The first half ended 1-0.
The first half pattern of play was repeated in the second with chances at the Emlyn keeper. It wasn’t long before Hudson got her first club goal and Aber’s second when on 53rd minutes Hughes played the ball in to Hudson to slot into the back of the net. Emlyn though did not give up and battled in the middle of the park against Aber’s trio of N.Evans, Jenkins and Emma Cartwright. Emlyn’s best chance of open play came when a long range shot between the defence saw the ball go marginally wide. A big boost was given to the Aber squad on 80th minute with Tania Wylde making a return into the team after a 2 year absence with a broken leg. On the 85th minute, Wylde’s first touch saw her set up Hudson’s second, Aber’s third of the game. The game was not yet over when on 91st minute, new signing Melanie Pons, got her head on to the end of Josie Pugh’s cross to score on her home debut and secure Aber the 3 points.
This win has now seen Aber Ladies jump out of the relegation zone in to 9th place.
