JD Welsh Premier League Friday 17th August (7:35p.m Kick Off) Aberystwyth Town v Cardiff Met Aberystwyth Town will look to build on the momentum gained from their season opening victory against Llandudno last weekend, as they take on Cardiff Met at Park Avenue in front of the live Sgorio cameras on Friday evening. Captain Declan Walker netted Town’s winning goal last weekend in an excellent all-round team performance that saw the black and greens get off to the perfect start in the JD Welsh Premier League, and they will hope for more of the same on Friday evening as they welcome the Archers to Park Avenue. There were many positives to be taken from last Friday night’s victory, not least the performance of local 16-year old Lee Jenkins – who slotted in to the central defensive position without hesitation on his full JD Welsh Premier League debut. The youngster was rewarded for his recent performances this week as he signed a 2-year contract with the club – a huge boost to the young protégé, along with the club’s Academy and Development sides who’ve helped nurture Lee through the age groups to the point where he’s now pushing for a regular place in the first team starting line-up. Additionally, the black and greens will take plenty of confidence and belief from the adversity they faced last weekend, with goalkeeper Leigh Jenkins forced off with an injury and striker Rio Ahmadi donning the gloves for the final 35 minutes. Despite that, Town continued to dominate the game, with Paulo Mendes and Mathew Jones bossing the midfield, and maintained a clean sheet – which demonstrates the spirit and character that will be needed once more against a well organised Cardiff Met outfit on Friday evening. Friday’s visitors also got off to a winning start last weekend, winning 2-1 against Newtown at Cyncoed Campus thanks to goals from Eliot Evans and Dan Spencer. The students finished in the league’s top 6 positions last season and were one game away from qualifying for Europe – much like the Aber side who lost in the JD Welsh Cup Final to Connah’s Quay Nomads in May. Aber faced Met three times last season in total, losing 2-0 at home before gaining a well-earned 1-1 draw at Cyncoed in January, and knocking the Archers out of the Welsh Cup thanks to Malcolm Melvin’s header in a 1-0 win. Friday will again see former seasider Christian Edwards return to his old stomping ground in charge of the Cardiff based outfit. In what is sure to be an entertaining game in front of the Sgorio cameras, kick off at Park Avenue is at 7:35p.m – with coverage starting live on S4C at 7:30p.m. Admission costs £8 for adults, £5 concessions and £2 for u16’s. Your support made a huge difference in seeing Aber through to victory against Llandudno last weekend, so come on down and cheer on the black and greens to a positive result once more on Friday evening!
