Uwchgynghrair JD Cymru Premier League Mawrth/Tuesday 9 Ebrill/April Pontypridd United/Unedig 0 Tref Aberystwyth Town 0 O dan warchae, amddiffynodd deg dyn Aber yn arwrol neithiwr ym Mhontypridd i enill pwynt gwerthfawr ar eu gorymdaith hir i achubiaeth. Aeth Aber yn agos i sgorio drwy John Owen a Jonathan Evans ond roedd eu cefnau yn erbyn y wal pan anfonwyd Jack Thorn o’r cae ar ol 78 munud. Arbediadau penigamp Dave Jones helpodd Aber i ddal ymlaen i’w pwynt pwysig. Under immense pressure ten men Aber defended heroically at Pontypridd last night to gain a potentially crucial point on their long walk to safety. Town went close to scoring through John Owen and Jonathan Evans, but were up against it when Jack Thorn was sent off on 78 minutes. Dave Jones however made some super saves and Aber held on for the draw. A phenomenal away support numbering forty or fifty turned up to the game and were signing and banging their drums way before the players entered the field of play, however the game started in a fairly scrappy manner, interspersed with set pieces. Iwan Lewis fired wide for the visitors, and home keeper George Ratcliffe punched Jake Canavan’s corner clear, then at the other end a left wing cross from Ethan Vaughan brought out a stunning point blank save from Jones to deny Ben Ahmun’s header. Ahmun then saw a shot blocked, then a couple of nice Aber moves just failed to connect before Lewis set up Evans to fire over. Jones pulled out a couple more stops, Liam Walsh fired over and then in injury time Ponty’s Clayton Green missed a point blank header from a right wing cross, and the visitors went in level at the break.
The hosts started the second half on top with a series of corners, bravely repelled by Thorn, Louis Bradford and their colleagues at the back. Then in response a nice move fell at the feet of Canavan, whose curling shot from distance was saved by Ratcliffe. Jones punched clear a header from another home corner, then sub Steff Davies turned and sent in a shot cleared off the line, only for Johnny Evans to acrobatically fire a goalbound effort which was denied by Ratcliffe’s last gasp save down to his right. With the momentum tilting towards the visitors a controversial decision then turned the game completely in favour of the homesters, when Jack Thorn was sent off with twelve minutes to go, apparently for preventing a goalscoring opportunity. Jones again did well to parry Owain Jones’ free kick to safety, and a nerve wracking period of Ponty set pieces and balls into the box ensued. Owen fired just wide on a 90th minute breakaway after some nice trickery, and sent in another effort saved by Ratcliffe in the six minutes of injury time, while Jones turned a Ponty cross over the bar, and with the Black and Green tifosi cheering their team to the rafters, the Seasiders held on for what is known in the trade as a huge point. Although Aber’s Dave Jones will probably earn Man of Match accolades, Anthony Williams’ men also had chances to win this game even with ten men, and a draw was probably a fair result. The Black and Greens’ bandwaggon moves on to Jenner Park, Barry on Saturday for a 2.30pm kick off. Reassemble Green Army!! Comments are closed.
