A depleted Aber Town side fell to defeat in their final pre season match of 2023, as late second half goals from Tom Croughan (78 mins) and Josh Quarless (90 mins) earned victory for Northern Premier League outfit City of Liverpool FC at the Berry Street Garage Stadium in Bootle. The Black and Greens, playing in yellow, were under the cosh from the start and Xenon Bahula set up Max Allen on the edge of the box, only for Town keeper Sam Green to hold his low effort. The dangerous Bahula then got in behind the Aber back line but his effort just cleared the bar. Allen was denied once again by Town’s keeper with a low effort, Fleming’s effort rebounded off the post, and Danny Mitchley’s attempt was cleared off the line with the Black and Greens glad to go in goalless at half time.
Mitchley was again denied by Green in goal for Aber who turned his effort onto the post as the “Purps” continued to dominate, and he was back in action soon afterwards to tip a 30 yard volley from Mike Fitzgerald over the bar. Mitchley hit the post and sent a header just wide but then with just twelve minutes left he finally made the difference, getting in behind and sending in a shot which Croughan tapped in at the back post. Then in the last minute Mitchley sent Quarless away, he followed up his first attempt to bury the ball into the net at the second attempt. On the balance of play City of Liverpool probably deserved their two goal margin and Town Manager Anthony Williams will hope to strengthen his squad numbers ahead of Saturday’s MG Nathaniel Cup Second Round match away to Barry Town United (ko 2.30pm).
