Nathaniel MG Cup - 1st Round
Tuesday 28th August (7:45p.m Kick Off) Welshpool Town v Aberystwyth Town Aberystwyth Town will kick off their 2018/19 Nathaniel MG Cup campaign with an away tie at Spar Mid Wales League outfit Welshpool Town on Tuesday evening. Aber enter the game having fallen to a narrow 2-1 defeat away at JD Welsh Premier League leaders Connah's Quay Nomads on Friday evening, in a game where they could easily have snatched a late point. The black and greens will now look to get back to winning ways with a tough fixture at Maes y Dre Recreation Ground. Despite a late wonder strike from Wes Baynes at the Deeside Stadium, Aber weren't quite able to snatch a late point that they arguably deserved against Connah's Quay Nomads last Friday evening. In a frantic finale, Aber peppered the Nomads goal with John Danby producing a fine save from Declan Walker's penalty and despite falling to defeat, there were many positives for the black and greens to take forward into tomorrow night's fixture with Welshpool Town. After Friday's defeat, Director of Football Nev Powell commented; "For an away performance it was really good, we were the better side for large parts and we should have got a point out of the game in the end. I couldn't have asked for any more from the lads, and we'll get their heads up and focus on a big week with the league cup game and home fixture against Llanelli next Friday". Indeed, there were many positives to be taken from Friday's defeat that Aber can look to build on ahead of a week in which they face two fixtures in three days - starting on Tuesday at the Recreation Ground. Tuesday nights hosts Welshpool Town are a familiar name to many Aber fans, spending many years in the Welsh Premier League before slipping down to the Cymru Alliance and Spar Mid Wales League. Nevertheless, they will provide the black and greens with another stern test in Tuesday's Nathaniel MG Cup, with players like Sam Evans and Ricky Litchfield posing a goal threat. They've picked up 7 points from their opening 5 games in the Spar Mid Wales League including a 1-1 draw away at Bow Street 10 days ago. In what is sure to be a challenging tie for Aber, kick off at the Recreation Ground is at 7:45p.m, and Welshpool Town's address is listed as SY21 7SU. Come along and see if Aber can can kick start another classic cup run similar to that in the JD Welsh Cup last year! JD Welsh Premier League
Friday 24th August Connah's Quay Nomads 2 Aberystwyth Town 1 Depleted Aber Town came within a whisker of a surprise point at Connah’s Quay last night, but John Danby’s 88th minute penalty save safeguarded the Deesiders’ 100% record. Goals from Michael Bakare (38 mins) and Michael Wilde (44 mins) appear to have won the game but then Danby saved Declan Walker’s penalty, and Wes Baynes smashed in another incredible right wing volley in the 90th minute to ensure a nervy finish for the hosts. A daunting task awaited the Black and Greens, facing a side who had already swept aside Llanelli 7-0 and Champions TNS 1-0, and the task grew greater with the enforced absence of Centre Back Lee Jenkins, who was replaced by Jack Rimmer. Aber made a great start however and Rio Ahmadi had a goal disallowed for offside within the first minute. Wilde responded by sending a shot narrowly wide but then back at the other end Baynes saw a free kick cleared, and from the resulting corner Aber saw a scrambled effort squirt inches wide. The loyal visiting fans were in great song, and although George Horan headed over for Nomads, back came Aber again with Baynes again inches wide from a free kick. At the other end Matthew Jones and Jack Rimmer both pulled off great blocks to deny Bakare, and Terry McCormick denied Rob Hughes with a flying save, before Bakare opened the scoring with a sumptuous free kick. Six minutes of pressure later Hughes played in Wilde to double the lead under McCormick and the hosts had a two goal lead they barely deserved from a half in which Aber had played a full and commendable part. The psychological blow of goal number two hit Aber in a second half which was a quieter affair. For Aber Ahmadi stumbled in a great position, then McCormick denied Wilde, and sub Andy Owens in turn. The Black and Greens were further depleted by the enforced substitution of poor Ryan Wollacott who had suffered a gash to the head, and lost a tooth for his troubles, but Town stayed in the game, and then suddenly with all three subs made for Connah’s Quay, Disney was carried off injured, and Aber sensed a fairytale ending against ten men. Walker saw a great shot parried, and then Ahmadi was felled in the box and Town were offered a lifeline from the spot. Danby however denied Walker, but there was still time for Baynes to crash home another astonishing Goal of the Month contender to put the game right back in the balance. Baynes earned a corner with an injury time free kick and Walker curled wide in a frantic ending, but Quay clung on to their three points and having run the ball into the corners at every opportunity were mightily relieved to hear the final whistle. Despite losing this match Aber must be afforded great credit for running the League leaders closer than anyone else this season, and a good start and finish to the game will give them heart looking ahead to a busy week, as they visit Welshpool Town on Tuesday night in the League Cup before hosting Llanelli at Park Avenue on Friday. Both games kick off at 7.45pm – don’t miss the drama! Aberystwyth Town will look to bounce back from last weekend’s home defeat as they travel to face Connah’s Quay Nomads at the Deeside Stadium in the JD Welsh Premier League on Friday evening. Aber were well beaten on a difficult night for the black and greens against a strong Cardiff Met outfit last weekend, and they will be keen to get back to a similar performance level shown on the opening JD Welsh Premier League weekend victory when they beat Llandudno at Park Avenue.
Despite falling to defeat, Aber Director of Football Nev Powell insisted the seasiders would learn quickly from their mistakes and put the performance right this weekend against the Nomads. “That wasn’t quite us out there tonight, and we had a lot of youngsters on that pitch who’ll learn from their mistakes, that’s the only way we’ll get better.” Indeed, Aber’s youthful side will certainly learn plenty from each performance at this early stage in the season as they look to improve as a team. Local youngsters such as Lee Jenkins (16 years old), Mathew Jones (19 years old) and Jack Rimmer (19 years old) have already established their places in the first team squad and are sure to continue their improvement with more game time in the JD Welsh Premier League. Powell also praised the endeavour of the seasiders on Friday evening, stating “The positive from the defeat against Cardiff Met is that we kept going and the lads gave 110% effort. We kept playing our way and the second half performance was much improved”. Aber will again be looking for similar levels of commitment and endeavour on Friday evening as they face an in-form Connah’s Quay Nomads side. Andy Morrison’s side have got off to a flying start this season, winning both their opening games against Llanelli and league champions The New Saints, scoring eight goals in the process. The Nomads also boast a fine defensive record, keeping two clean sheets in two games this season. Nevertheless, Aber can take heart from the fact they’ve scored six goals in their last three fixtures against Connah’s Quay – their most notable performance being a 4-2 victory at Park Avenue back in January thanks to Joe Phillips’ hat-trick. The most recent clash between the sides saw the Nomads beat Aber 4-1 in the Welsh Cup Final in early May. In what is sure to be an excellent test for the black and greens in their first away fixture of the season, kick off at the Deeside Stadium is at 7:45p.m. Connah’s Quay Nomads address is listed as Deeside Stadium, Kelsterton Road, Connah's Quay, Deeside, CH5 4BR. Aber will be looking to cause an upset as they aim to get their season back on track Friday evening. JD Welsh Premier League
Friday 17th August Aberystwyth Town 1-4 Cardiff Met Aberystwyth Town suffered a disappointing defeat at the hands of Cardiff Met at Park Avenue on an evening where nothing seemed to go right for the black and greens. Goals from Eliot Evans (16, 38), Sam Snaith (42) and Chris Baker (65) gave the visitors a four-goal advantage before Wes Baynes (66) pulled one back for the hosts with an excellent low volley. Aber named an unchanged outfield side from last week's win over Llandudno, with the only change coming in goal where Terry McCormick replaced the injured Leigh Jenkins. It was visitors Cardiff Met who started the game the sharper, as Will Evans tested McCormick, before Aber registered their first shot on goal with Declan Walker’s low effort straight at goalkeeper Alex Lang. But the hosts were struggling to come to grips with the visitors shape and mobility, and on 16 minutes they took a deserved lead when Will Evans played in Eliot Evans who struck a low left-footed shot into the bottom right corner to make it 0-1. Try as they might, Aber seemed unable to respond as the visitors made it difficult to create any clear cut chances with their rigid and organised defensive shape. On 30 minutes, Ryan Edwards showed a glimpse of brilliance before whipping a dangerous cross into the penalty area but goalkeeper Lang dealt with it expertly. Then, on 38 minutes the visitors doubled their lead as Matt Neale headed the ball across the penalty area where it fell kindly for Eliot Evans to tap home his second goal of the evening for 0-2. On 42 minutes came the real sucker punch – as the hosts look to make it to half time with a 2 goal margin to make up, Met further extended their lead when Sam Snaith latched on to a loose ball before rounding McCormick and tapping into an empty net for 0-3. Aber were shell-shocked and needed the half time whistle. Rather than let their heads drop and become discouraged, the hosts came out for the second half with more purpose and intensity as they fought to find a way back into the game. Local lad Mathew Jones and Joe Phillips began to control more of the midfield areas, and on 53 minutes Ryan Edwards fed Declan Walker who’s low effort went inches wide of the post. On 60 minutes, substitutes Nashawn Blake and Jack Rimmer replaced Paulo Mendes and Phillips to try and add some impetus, but on 65 minutes Met grabbed their fourth goal of the evening to completely kill the game. Chris Baker stole the ball in midfield before seeing his shot take a huge deflection and land in the bottom corner of the net to make it 0-4. The goal summed up the type of luck Aber had been getting all evening, but on 66 minutes came the shining moment of Town’s performance as Ryan Edwards chipped a pass towards Wes Baynes, who struck a superb half volley across goal and into the far corner of the net to make it 1-4. The home supporters sensed the smallest glimmer of an epic comeback, but the visitors regained control of the game immediately and almost added a fifth goal as Evans went close to grabbing his hat-trick. On 80 minutes, substitute Geoff Kellaway almost pulled another goal back as his front post flick was well saved by Lang in goal, but it wasn’t to be as Aber fell to defeat at the hands of a well organised and clinical Cardiff Met side. After such a good start to the season against Llandudno, it was a disappointing night for the seasiders at Park Avenue. Nevertheless, credit must go to the visitors who were defensively solid and clinical in attack. Aber’s new team will have learnt more again from last night’s defeat, and will hope for redemption as they look to get back on track with a positive result away at Connah’s Quay Nomads next Friday evening. Teams: Aberystwyth Town: McCormick, Baynes, Lee Jenkins, Wollacott, S.Edwards, Phillips, Walker (C), Jones, R Edwards, Ahmadi (Subs: Blake (60), Kellaway (74), Rimmer (60), Williams, Rowe) Cardiff Met: Lang, Lewis, McCarthy (C), Edwards, Rees, Neale (68), Baker, W Evans, E Evans, Spencer (84), Snaith (52) (Subs: Swindlehurst, Thomas (68), Owen (52), Bowler (84), Williams, Aalto) Attendance: 255 Aberystwyth Town are pleased to announce the signing of experienced Welsh Premier League goalkeeper Terry McCormick. Terry has made a total of 179 appearances in the league for Bala Town, Connah’s Quay Nomads and Rhyl, and will go straight into Friday’s squad to face Cardiff Met in place of local goalie Leigh Jenkins; who’s recovering from injury after being taken off against Llandudno last weekend. New signing McCormick started his career with Tranmere Rovers before moving to Marine, and then on to Congleton Town who play in the North West Counties League. He moved into the Welsh Premier League with Connah’s Quay Nomads in 2008 and went on to make over 50 appearances in all competitions between 2008 and 2010. He then joined Bala Town in 2011 and helped guide the Lakesiders to the Europa League play-off final. After his spell at Bala, he moved on to Conwy Borough before moving back to Connah’s Quay in July 2013 – and was named in the Welsh Premier League Team of Phase One for the 2013/14 season. Terry has also spent time playing for Flint Town, Rhyl, Brickfield Rangers, Runcorn Town and Ashville FC. Everyone at the club would like to welcome Terry to Park Avenue, and you can see him in action on Friday evening as Aber take on Cardiff Met at Park Avenue. The club would also like to take the opportunity to wish goalkeeper Leigh Jenkins a speedy recovery after it was confirmed he suffered a hairline fracture on his shin during last weekend’s victory over Llandudno, an injury that will hopefully see Leigh back in action much sooner than first feared. |
