JD Welsh Premier League Friday 17th August (7:35p.m Kick Off) Aberystwyth Town v Cardiff Met Aberystwyth Town will look to build on the momentum gained from their season opening victory against Llandudno last weekend, as they take on Cardiff Met at Park Avenue in front of the live Sgorio cameras on Friday evening. Captain Declan Walker netted Town’s winning goal last weekend in an excellent all-round team performance that saw the black and greens get off to the perfect start in the JD Welsh Premier League, and they will hope for more of the same on Friday evening as they welcome the Archers to Park Avenue. There were many positives to be taken from last Friday night’s victory, not least the performance of local 16-year old Lee Jenkins – who slotted in to the central defensive position without hesitation on his full JD Welsh Premier League debut. The youngster was rewarded for his recent performances this week as he signed a 2-year contract with the club – a huge boost to the young protégé, along with the club’s Academy and Development sides who’ve helped nurture Lee through the age groups to the point where he’s now pushing for a regular place in the first team starting line-up. Additionally, the black and greens will take plenty of confidence and belief from the adversity they faced last weekend, with goalkeeper Leigh Jenkins forced off with an injury and striker Rio Ahmadi donning the gloves for the final 35 minutes. Despite that, Town continued to dominate the game, with Paulo Mendes and Mathew Jones bossing the midfield, and maintained a clean sheet – which demonstrates the spirit and character that will be needed once more against a well organised Cardiff Met outfit on Friday evening. Friday’s visitors also got off to a winning start last weekend, winning 2-1 against Newtown at Cyncoed Campus thanks to goals from Eliot Evans and Dan Spencer. The students finished in the league’s top 6 positions last season and were one game away from qualifying for Europe – much like the Aber side who lost in the JD Welsh Cup Final to Connah’s Quay Nomads in May. Aber faced Met three times last season in total, losing 2-0 at home before gaining a well-earned 1-1 draw at Cyncoed in January, and knocking the Archers out of the Welsh Cup thanks to Malcolm Melvin’s header in a 1-0 win. Friday will again see former seasider Christian Edwards return to his old stomping ground in charge of the Cardiff based outfit. In what is sure to be an entertaining game in front of the Sgorio cameras, kick off at Park Avenue is at 7:35p.m – with coverage starting live on S4C at 7:30p.m. Admission costs £8 for adults, £5 concessions and £2 for u16’s. Your support made a huge difference in seeing Aber through to victory against Llandudno last weekend, so come on down and cheer on the black and greens to a positive result once more on Friday evening! Aberystwyth Town Football Club are delighted to announce that young starlet Lee Jenkins has signed a 2-year contract with the club. At just 16 years of age, Lee is one of the club’s most promising talents, and has already broken into the first team squad – making his full JD Welsh Premier League debut in Town’s home victory against Llandudno last weekend. Ceredigion-based Lee played a pivotal role in the success of Bari Morgan's u19's double-winning squad last season and has produced a number of impressive performances for Aber's development sides in recent seasons. Despite being just 16 years old, he already stands at 6 feet tall, and is a no-nonsense defender with a physical presence who also possesses the technical ability to play the ball to feet. Lee was selected to play for Wales' u18 School Boys side last season, where he excelled in the central defensive position against old enemy England. Having impressed with the first team in pre-season, Lee was rewarded with his first JD Welsh Premier League start last weekend and was absolutely outstanding in helping Aber’s back four keep a clean sheet against the North Wales outfit. After the game, he spoke to Aber Town’s Youtube channel about his league debut – an interview you can watch again here. Everyone at the club is delighted to see local youngster Lee committing his future to the club, and we very much look forward to seeing more of him in action this Friday evening as Aber take on Cardiff Met at Park Avenue in the JD Welsh Premier League. JD Welsh Premier League
Friday 10th August Aberystwyth Town 1-0 Llandudno Aberystwyth Town got their 2018/19 JD Welsh Premier League season off to the perfect start as they earned a thoroughly deserved three points against Llandudno at Park Avenue on Friday evening. Declan Walker's sublime 15th minute strike was enough to see Aber to victory, in what was an impressive defensive performance from the black and greens - centred around young 16 year old debutant Lee Jenkins, which saw Aber home through ten minutes of injury time to kick off the new season in the perfect manner. Aber started the game on the front foot, playing with great intensity and tempo, with Declan Walker the first to test Llandudno's goalkeeper after just four minutes with a long range effort. Soon after, it was Joe Phillips' turn as he cut inside from the right flank and fired a shot narrowly over the crossbar. Then, on 15 minutes Aber got the breakthrough their early play deserved, as captain Declan Walker found space on the edge of the penalty area, before shifting the ball to his right and curling a magnificent effort into the top corner of the net to make it 1-0. He quickly ran over to the famous terraced corner of Park Avenue to celebrate with Aber's jubilant fans, and the hosts were off to the perfect start. Rather than sit back on their lead, Town continued to pepper the visitors goal, as Walker again found the net on 20 minutes only for the referee to disallow the goal for an infringement on the goalkeeper. On 25 minutes, winger Ryan Edwards whizzed down the left flank before cutting inside and seeing his shot go inches wide of the post, before Aber somehow failed to double their lead on 28 minutes as Rio Ahmadi and Joe Phillips saw their efforts saved by Llandudno's Shaun Pearson, before Declan Walker's rebound rattled the crossbar. The hosts were utterly dominant, with Ryan Wollacott and 16-year old centre back Lee Jenkins snuffing out any danger posed by the visitors' attacks. As half time approached, Aber again went agonisingly close as Ahmadi raced through on goal only to see his shot brilliantly saved on to the crossbar by the fingertips of goalkeeper Pearson, and the hosts would go into the break with a slender advantage. Aber started the second half in similar fashion to the first, looking organised and solid, with Paulo Mednes and Mathew Jones bossing the central midfield areas. On 52 minutes came Aber's first worrying moment of the game, as Toby Jones crossed for Mike Pearson who was denied by a superb last ditch block by Aber's Steff Edwards. However, Aber goalie Leigh Jenkins, who'd performed admirably up until that point, was caught between both players on their way down and suffered a nasty injury to his right leg - resulting in him leaving the field and striker Rio Ahmadi putting on the gloves to play as goalkeeper for the remaining 35 minutes. It would have been easy for Aber to panic at that moment, but instead they did the exact opposite as they continued to dictate the tempo of the game and threaten the visitors' goal, with substitute Nashawn Blake providing additional pace and power up front. Llandudno began to opt for a more direct route to goal, pumping long balls towards experienced centre forwards Mark Connelly and John Owen, but Aber's 16 year old centre back Jenkins, aided by Baynes and Wollacott either side of him, was unfazed as he dominated the physical battle. On 70 minutes, Nashawn Blake strode forwards before unleashing a swerving effort just wide of the post, before Mathew Jones' goal bound header was blocked by Llandudno full back Ieuan Hewitt as Aber looked to press home their advantage. Visitors Llandudno slowly began to crank up the pressure as the clock struck 80 minutes, with Danny Hughes volleying over before former seasider John Owen headed wide, but the men in yellow were standing firm. There were agonising groans from Town's vocal supporters as the fourth official indicated a minimum of 8 minutes additional time, as the visitors piled forwards in search of an equaliser. Kai Edwards headed wide in the final minutes before Mike Pearson's bicycle kick was well saved by striker-come-goalkeeper Ahmadi, and Aber saw the game out to earn a massive 3 points on the opening weekend. A huge victory for the black and greens under the circumstances, in what was the perfect start to the 2018/19 season. It was an exciting attacking performance matched by an equally impressive collective defensive display, and Aber must now build on that momentum as they face Cardiff Met at Park Avenue next Friday evening in front of the Sgorio cameras. Aberystwyth Town Football Club are delighted to confirm the signings of three promising youngsters ahead of the start of the JD Welsh Premier League season tomorrow. Kamon-Sherell Assidjo, Eliott Assi and Harri Rowe have all signed on for the 2018/19 season as they look to play a pivotal part in the black and greens' squad during the season ahead.
Kamon-Sherell or 'Sher' as he's better known, is a French-born left sided midfielder known for his pace and trickery, and joins the club having spent the majority of last season with National League South side Dulwich Hamlet FC. He's 23 years old, and started his career in his native France where he made 14 appearances for French third-tier side Vennisieux. Elliot is a versatile attacker who can play as a central striker or in the number 10 role, and is known for his hold up and link-up play. Born in Paris, France, but of Nigerian descent - he spent last season with Welsh League side Penybont and has also spent time with Hendon FC of the Southern League Premier South in the past. Harri is one of the club's most promising young talents - he's a Welsh School Boys Under 18's representative, and impressed last season whilst playing at left back for Bari Morgan's double-winning u19's squad. Harri has been inching ever closer to first team action throughout the past few seasons, and has impressed during his time with the first team squad during this year's pre-season friendlies. He will now form a part of the black and greens' first team squad throughout the season as Aber look to get off to a flying start at home to Llandudno on Friday evening. The club wishes to welcome all three players to Park Avenue and look forward to seeing them in action for the black and greens throughout the season. JD Welsh Premier League Friday 10th August (7:45p.m Kick Off) Aberystwyth Town v Llandudno Aberystwyth Town will begin their JD Welsh Premier League campaign under the Friday night lights as they welcome Llandudno to Park Avenue for their opening game of the new season. Aber finished one place above Iwan Williams' side in last season's league table, and the black and greens will now be looking to get off to a positive start to kick off the 2018/19 league campaign. Aber have enjoyed a testing few weeks of pre-season, drawing with Halesowen Town and falling to narrow defeats against Telford United and Haverfordwest County before convincing away 3-0 victories at Brickfield Rangers and most recently Neston Nomads last weekend. The black and greens have seen a number of experienced Welsh Premier League players join the club during the summer - including Alan Goodall, Ryan Edwards, Wes Baynes, Paulo Mendes, Alec Williams and Rio Ahmadi. Town's supporters will now be hopeful the new arrivals can gel with last season's squad members, along with the up and coming youngsters involved in Bari Morgan's double winning squad last season, to get the team off to a winning start on Friday evening. Friday's visitors Llandudno have also seen a number of comings and goings over the summer period, with key players such as Marc Williams and Mike Williams departing Parc Maes Du. They have, however, added experienced defenders Kai Edwards and Mike Pearson from Connah's Quay Nomads, along with former seasider John Owen. Iwan Williams' side experienced somewhat of a tumultuous pre-season, losing against Whitchurch Alport, Chester City and Wigan Athletic, whilst beating Wrexham, Prestatyn and Llangefni. They will undoubtedly have their eye on securing a top six position this season, much like Aber. In what is sure to be an exciting opening night in the JD Welsh Premier League, kick off at Park Avenue is at 7:45p.m. Admission costs £8 for adults, £5 for concessions and £2 for u16's. Town's supporters are also reminded that season tickets are still available to purchase for a price of £95 (which brings the average price per game down to £6) and are welcomed to e-mail abertownfc@live.co.uk for more information. |
