Doctor Edwards served as Aber Town’s Doctor for over a decade and was an extremely popular and well loved character at the Club. His annual Medical Sessions with the Players ensured Aberystwyth Town gained Domestic and European Licences, and his commitment as a Club Volunteer went beyond the call of duty: even carrying out one Player Medical in the Secretary’s house at 11pm on deadline night, to ensure the Club submitted the required paperwork in time! He was a crucial part of Aberystwyth Town’s foray into the Europa League in 2014, arranging ECG tests for many of the Squad, and his jovial nature and friendly character were appreciated by Players, Officials and supporters alike. As Dr Edwards’ illness grew his role as Club Doctor was taken over by his son Dafydd, who kept goal for Aber Town’s Youth Team in the FAW Welsh Youth Cup Final some years ago and has recently returned to the area after training in Cardiff. Richard was a proud Welsh speaker and an active member of the community, Treasurer of the Town’s St Davids Day Parade “Pared Gwyl Dewi,” an active member of the Welsh language social group Cylch Cinio, and also involved with local Charity HAHAV. In his spare time he loved skiing, golfing and red wine, and was very proud to have recently become a grandfather twice over. Club Chairman Donald Kane said: “It is with great sorrow that we hear of the passing of Dr Richard Edwards. He was a true gentleman, friend and supporter of our Club. His many years of help to ourselves in his capacity as a Doctor was appreciated by everyone at the Club, from players to officials and management. Our thoughts at this time go to his family, now without their loving husband, father and very proud grandfather. On a personal level, Richard was one of the nicest people I have ever met, a great person lost to us. RIP Dr Edwards.” The Club expresses its deepest condolences to Richard’s widow Dana, his children Dafydd and Fflur, and their extended family at this difficult time. Comments are closed.
