The Black and Greens enjoyed a hastily arranged mid season friendly away to high flying Newtown on Saturday afternoon, coming away with an impressive 4-1 victory, thanks to goals from Mark Cadwallader (2), Luca Hogan and an Own Goal from Shane Sutton.

The friendly, with an early 1pm start, was arranged to combat an enforced 24 days sabbatical from Cymru Premier football caused by Colwyn Bay’s postponed Welsh Cup match against Barry Town last weekend, which disrupted Aber and Newtown’s pre Christmas schedule.

Chris Hughes’ Newtown side started best and stand in striker Hanoch Boakye opened the scoring for the hosts on eleven minutes. However Town responded brilliantly and within five minutes Cadwallader had equalised with a near post volley to the top corner. Nine minutes later things got better for the Black and Greens when Cadwallader capitalised on a second chance to put Aber into the lead. Town were the better side from then on and on the stroke of half time John Owen’s cross was deflected into his own goal by Sutton, with keeper Andy Wycherley powerless to prevent Anthony Williams’ men taking a two goal lead into the break.

Town continued to dominate in the second half, and Luca Hogan snaffled up a fourth goal, before substitutions took over, and despite a few more chances the Seasiders saw out the game and took a three goal victory home across Plynlimon.

This was of course only a pre season friendly but Aberystwyth Town’s performance will give them huge confidence heading into a busy Christmas/New Year period, with matches on Tuesday 26th December at Pontypridd United, before a home game against Haverfordwest on Saturday 30th. Both matches kick off at 2.30pm – you won’t want to miss them!
