Tuesday 20th September Carmarthen Town 0 Aberystwyth Town 5 Aberystwyth Town overturned the form books with an astonishing five goal win at close rivals Carmarthen last night, scoring three late goals after being reduced to ten men. A brilliant hat trick from Geoff Kellaway and further strikes from Luke Borrelli and Kurtis March put the icing on the cake for terrific Town. For the first time in a number of weeks Manager Matthew Bishop had a full squad to choose from, although Sam Rodon was injured in the warm up and replaced by returning Captain Luke Sherbon. On loan signing Chris Mullock went straight into goal and imposed himself from the start with a commanding performance. Aber started off trying to pass the ball round, and although the fluency took a while to come they took the lead in the 11th minute when a Ricky Watts throw out on the right wing fell for Borrelli, and the Llanelli Livewire swivelled on a sixpence to send a low volley under Lee Idzi. This was a major break at a great time for Town and set them up for a composed performance. Liam Thomas headed over from a corner for Carmarthen and then Borrelli chested the ball down for Kellaway to send a shot fizzing wide. Next Kellaway went on a thrilling burst down the right and set up Chris Jones, but he was denied by Idzi. Town’s pace was worrying the leaden footed Carmarthen defence, and Borrelli sent a shot just wide before Greg Walters cantered into the box only to be denied at the last minute. Carmarthen’s one dimensional tactics were being neutralised by a strong defensive performance from the defensive axis of Mullock, Will Bell and Ryan Wollacott, and although there were few clear cut chances for either side in the first half Aber certainly deserved to go in a goal ahead. Once Aber had survived a predictable but half hearted early onslaught from Carmarthen the scene was set for them to cut free after the break. Joe Clarke won a corner which Jones sent in and Wollacott’s header flashed dramatically past the post. Borrelli was working his socks off up front for Aber and was extremely unfortunate to be mistakenly yellow carded for a handball incident. Then came the game changing moment, as Walters gambolled down the left flank before spotting Kellwaway’s angled run, and the former slotted through a cute ball for the latter to score with a thrilling footed strike on the hour. Wollacott had a goalbound header deflected wide, and then on 66 minutes a flashpoint erupted. With Carmarthen’s increasingly desperate looking team now reduced to lunging in it was inevitable perhaps that a conflagration would occur and after a visiting player was fouled the hosts instigated a dust up which saw three yellow cards and a sending off for the unfortunate Borrelli. Aber made the best of things and clinical Kellaway’s pace now turned a win into a whallopping. His burst down the left wing on 71 minutes lead to a cross which was turned in by the gleeful Kurtis March, leading to huge celebrations in front of Aber’s tifosi. Kellaway then dispossessed Vincent and nearly grabbed a fourth, but with 11 minutes left Chris Jones released him down the left and he blasted home for 4-0. The fun was not yet finished and in the 87th minute Chris Jones’ shot down the left was parried by Idzi and who else but clinical Kellaway was there to crown the individual performance of the season with a goal from ten yards, and an astonishing five nil win. After a tough few weeks Aber’s Players and Supporters shared an otherworldly surge of joy at the end of the game, celebrating together. The euphoria was real enough but in this crazy Dafabet Welsh Premier League Season Carmarthen finished the night three places ahead of Aber on goal difference, and other results mean that the Black and Greens are level with the Top Six but only two points ahead of the bottom side Airbus.
