Aberystwyth Town Goalkeeper Chris Mullock has certainly made the headlines this week, with his 65 yard goal from a free kick, scored on Friday night against Rhyl, being rightly shared on social media far and wide. Anyone with knowledge of the Mullock family tree however would have known that Aber were signing the grandson of a fearsome striker with an astonishing goal per game ratio for Aber in the 1950s. A conversation with Chris' family after the game on Friday night uncovered the fact that Grandfather Joe Mullock played as a striker for the Black and Greens in the 1950s. Further research via "The Old Black and Green" (Aber Town's History Book covering 1884-1984) reveals that Wrexham-based Mullock joined Town in 1952/3 - Aber's first of eleven consecutive seasons played in the Welsh League (South) - and went on to notch a remarkable 17 goals in 16 games to finish joint top scorer that season with Gordon Rees. The Old Black and Green sadly does not record any 65 yard goals for Joe Mullock - however we now know for sure that his goalscoring genes were passed on! Comments are closed.
