Aberystwyth Town ended their pre-season preparations on a high Saturday afternoon after another convincing away performance and 3-0 victory at West Cheshire outfit Neston Nomads in Ellesmere Port. Goals from Joe Phillips (8, 65) and Declan Walker (35) were enough to see Aber to victory on a warm afternoon in Cheshire, as the black and greens now turn their attentions to Friday's JD Welsh Premier League opener against Llandudno at Park Avenue.
Aber started the game with a good tempo and intensity, with Declan Walker and Alec Williams spraying the ball around in midfield and Joe Phillips and new signing Ryan Edwards causing problems down either flank. And within just 8 minutes, they found the opening goal as Joe Phillips raced through on goal before sliding the ball under the home 'keeper's body to make it 1-0. The visitors continued to dominate for large periods throughout the opening 30 minutes, as Phillips almost grabbed his second with a flicked header, before Nashawn Blake and Rio Ahmadi both saw their efforts sail inches wide of the post. Declan Walker stung the palms of the goalkeeper with a couple of rasping long range efforts, but he wasn't to be denied on the third time of trying, as Ahmadi and Wes Baynes produced some neat interplay down the right flank before Ryan Edwards was on hand at the back post to square the ball to Walker for an easy tap-in and 2-0. In truth, Aber could have been out of sight before half time, but the hosts were putting up a spirited performance - only being denied clear goalscoring opportunities by the impressive central defensive pairing of Lee Jenkins and Ryan Wollacott. The second half began with a similar pattern to the first, with Geoff Kellaway being introduced in place of youngster Tom Evans, who was again impressive in the left back position. Rio Ahmadi was first to test the goalkeeper as his lofted effort was well saved, before Ryan Edwards played in the front man on the right hand side of the penalty area, only to be denied by the 'keeper once more. On 65 minutes however, Aber did extend their lead as Joe Phillips strode forwards from midfield before unleashing a wonderful left-footed strike into the bottom corner of the net for 3-0. Soon after, it was almost four as Geoff Kellaway scooped his close-range effort over the crossbar, before he saw his brilliant glancing header disallowed for offside. Despite Aber's dominance, Neston continued to battle and were only denied a consolation goal by Chris Mullock, who made an excellent low stop to deny the Nomads' striker - a brilliant save considering the Aber 'keeper hadn't been called into action for much of the game. Starman Joe Phillips almost grabbed his hat-trick late on as his long range effort skimmed the post on it's way wide, but nevertheless it was another convincing away performance from the black and greens ahead of the start of the 2018/19 JD Welsh Premier League season. Aber now turn their attentions to next Friday's home JD Welsh Premier League opener with Llandudno in a 7:45 p.m kick off at Park Avenue. Comments are closed.
