Nathaniel MG Cup First Round Penrhyncoch v Aberystwyth Town Aberystwyth Town move seamlessly from Dafabet WPL to Nathaniel MG Cars Cup action on Wednesday evening, when they visit local friends and rivals Penrhyncoch for an eagerly awaited First Round contest in the renamed WPL Cup. Penrhyn entered the Cup as one of the wildcard entrants and neither side could have asked for a bigger draw in the First Round. Although the sides are regular friendly opponents this will be their first competitive encounter since 1984/5 when for one season only Penrhyn and Aber were in the Central Wales League together. Aber beat Penrhyn on Boxing Day by 2-0, went on to win the League Trophy at Cae Baker with a 5-0 win in May 1985 - the last time an Aberystwyth Town side won its League title. The links between the Clubs are endless. Town Manager Matthew Bishop lives in Penrhyn, and striker Jonathan Evans is on his third spell at Aber from the Roosters. On the other side Penrhyn's managment team is virtually a who's who of Black and Green Stalwarts with Manager Gari Lewis and his Assistants Aneurin Thomas and Bari Morgan firmly in the legendary status. The same can be said of Sion James, and many more of Penrhyn's starting XI will have represented Aber at some level in the past. Aber picked up two injuries in Saturday's 4-0 defeat to Bangor at Nantporth so captain Luke Sherbon and Central Midfielder Joe Clarke will sit out the tie. Jack Rimmer, recently loaned to Penrhyn, is ineligible to play. The match certainly has a claim to being the Tie of the Round, and is likely to attract the biggest crowd of Round One. Kick off is at 7.45pm and it is certainly not to be missed! Comments are closed.
