Friday 21st January Penybont 4 Aberystwyth Town 0 Aber Town suffered a very bad day at the office on their JD Cymru Premier return with a heavy four goal defeat at Penybont. Ben Ahmun scored an early hat trick (8,15 and 21 minutes) to settle the outcome early on, resurgent Aber saw Alex Darlington sent off on the hour before Nathan Wood added a fourth on 77 minutes for the rampant hosts who were extremely impressive on the night. Despite a positive start for the visitors, who were roared on by a superb away support, Bont were ahead within the first ten minutes as Ahmun capitalised on a collision between Aber’s Louis Bradford and Gregor Zabret to prod home the opener. Bradford was carried from the field with a nasty looking injury, to be replaced by Owen Orford. Zabret denied Sam Snaith a second but then Ahmun broke from the half way line to slip the ball under Zabret for a second, with Aber all at sea. Penybont’s swift attacks were causing the visitors all sorts of problems but Ahmun’s third came from a corner, delivered by Kane Owen and touched in at the near post by Penybont’s hat trick hero. With the game over to all intents and purposes a quarter of the way through Aber faced a tough challenge and Nathan Wood went close to making it four at the near post. Lewis Harling fired wide from the edge of the area, and Mael Davies and Owen both had shots deflected away for corners, and a totally one sided half ended at 3-0. The visitors changed formation and brought on Steff Davies and Darlington at half time, and after repelling a couple of shots from the home side, Aber played their way back into the game. John Owen ran the length of the pitch and curled just over from the left flank, then Jack Rimmer set up Davies who headed straight at Ash Morris in the home goal. Kane Owen cut inside and fired over for Penybont, then Darlington saw a straight red for a tough tackle, and Aber’s task got even harder. Zabret denied Kane Owen, then at the other end an astonishing period of Aber dominance ensued. John Owen smashed a superb shot against the post from the right; the indefatigable Steff Davies had another shot saved for a corner, then Lee Jenkins played a one two before feeding Davies who shot just wide. The visiting fans sensed a goal and started singing again, and John Owen was next at it, hitting a goalbound shot which deflected onto the crossbar, then after a series of corners Lee Jenkins headed just wide. John Owen side footed a shot straight at Morris, and then, seemingly inevitably Penybont broke and scored against the run of play, as Wood tapped home from close range. Cameron Allen, son of Gavin, came on for his Aber debut up front, and as the match moved into injury time the Aber supporters started up a wall of noise which lasted for at least five minutes, and send the Black and Greens back into the dressing room knowing that despite this bad result, their supporters still had their backs. Antonio Corbisiero and his players will want to repay that level of loyalty shown by their fans at Penybont, and they have the opportunity to do so next Friday evening as Cefn Druids come to Park Avenue for an 8pm kick off.
