Penybont Ladies 1 Aberystwyth Town Ladies 1 Welsh Women’s League (WWL) Sunday 10th September 2017 A late equaliser from midfielder Steph Land meant Aber took a point from their opening league fixture of the season but manager Kevin Jenkins admitted after the match “It should have been three,” writes Steven Brookes. After a long wait, the Black and Greens headed down to South Wales to get their league campaign underway. In the difficult weather conditions, it was the home team that started the better of the two sides and it was them that broke the deadlock early on. Bethan Davies’s free kick from out wide managed to beat Katie Christopher in the Aber goal with a little help from the wind which seemed to carry the ball in to the far corner of the net. Both teams struggled to create any clear-cut chances and a frustrating half for the away team ended with the home side ahead. Aber played a lot better in the second half and looked the most likely to score next. After a few off-target attempts and a few shots that were comfortably saved it by the Penybont goalkeeper, it was forward, Naomi Evans who came closest to levelling the scores. An excellent strike from the edge of the area hit the underside of the bar but unfortunately for her and Aber the ball bounced out and was cleared. It was starting to look like Aber were going to start the season with a defeat but the hard work did eventually pay off and the Black and Greens finally got the goal they deserved when Steph Land’s curling shot hit the inside of the post and rolled over the line to level the scores. Aber didn’t want just a draw and pushed forward for the winner, dominating the final stages but time wasn’t on their side and the match ended level. Aberystwyth Town Ladies’ next match is away to Briton Ferry who have played a match more than Aber and in those two games have scored a massive total of 22 goals.  Comments are closed.
