Aberystwyth Town start their 2023/24 Welsh Cup campaign this coming Saturday with a home tie against JD Cymru South outfit Pontardawe Town.
The Seasiders come into the match on the back of last Friday’s excellent performance against high flying Connahs Quay Nomads, and have taken 4 points from their last 3 league outings – a vast improvement on early season form.
This season of course marks 15 years since one of the Black and Greens' most famous cup campaigns – when the squad of 2009 containing the likes of Aneurin Thomas, Bari Morgan, Glyndwr Hughes and Sion James led the club to the Welsh Cup Final for the first time in 109 years.
This weeks opponents Pontardawe Town returned to the second tier last season for the first time in 7 years and finished in 9th place. They currently sit in 11th place and have accumulated 11 points from their 9 games so far this season. They come into this match on the back of 2 wins and 2 draws in their last 5 games.
Last weekend, they won 2-0 at Cambrian & Clydach thanks to goals from Iwan Batcup and Rio Booth. Their top scorers so far this season are Thomas Davies and Callum Silcox who both have 4 goals each.
Pontardawe are managed by Garry Taylor, who is in his second season in charge at the club having previously captained the club as a player. On his coaching staff is Joe Clarke, who wore the Black & Green for 20 matches in 2016 under Matthew Bishop, netting twice during his time at Aberystwyth University Park Avenue.
Wales' Rugby World Cup Quarter Final against Argentina, which kicks off at 4pm, will be shown live in the John Charles Lounge immediately after the game.
Admission prices at Aberystwyth University Park Avenue for this season are set at £8 for adults, £5 for concessions, £2 for Secondary School age kids, and Primary School and younger are free. Please note that this cup match is NOT covered under season tickets. Another Welsh Cup journey starts here!!
