The JD Cymru Premier’s only two ever-present clubs meet once again tomorrow, with Aber and Newtown looking to record their first points of the 2023/24 season after both clubs experienced dramatic endings to last season; Aber surviving relegation on that memorable afternoon at Park Avenue against Caernarfon Town, whilst Newtown came close to a 3rd consecutive European appearance – losing the Playoff Final on penalties to Haverfordwest County. Aber are still yet to get off the mark after defeats at home to Cardiff Met and away to Connahs Quay; whilst Newtown lost to Penybont at home on opening day and then away at Caernarfon last Friday evening.
It can be argued that both teams are still going through a transitional phase at the moment however. No less than seven players have made their debuts in Black and Green over the first two matches of this league season, and Aber have this week brought in young striker Luca Hogan on loan from Connah's Quay to bolster the ranks. Five new players have played in the red of Newtown in the same period including former Shrewsbury Town defender Dom Smith, ex-Wrexham midfielder Robbie Evans and the returning Jason Oswell, who gained legendary status at Latham Park between 2014-2017 - hitting 50 goals in 94 matches. As always in this fixture, there will be familiar faces on both sides with a number of players following in the footsteps of Cymru Premier legends such as Kevin Morrison, Jonathan Williams, Aneurin Thomas and Craig Williams by donning the shirts of both clubs. Dave Jones swapped SY16 for SY23 in the summer, whilst Jack Thorn spent a period on loan at Newtown in 2019/20. For Newtown, Mathew Jones spent five years with his hometown club before making the move down the A44 in the summer of 2022. Please note that the kick-off time for this match is 5.15pm to facilitate live online coverage on Sgorio. The programme starts at 5pm. You can’t beat actually being at the match though, and Latham Park can be found by using postcode SY16 1EN. Tickets are priced at £5 for Adults, £3 for Concessions and £1 for Under 16’s. The Mid-Wales Derby is back for another season!! Comments are closed.
