Dafabet Welsh Premier League
Friday 18th September Carmarthen Town 0 Aberystwyth Town 3 A superb defensive performance allied to some clinical second half finishing earned Aberystwyth Town a brilliant win at Richmond Park this evening, catapulting the Black and Greens back into the Top Six and replenishing confidence at Park Avenue ahead of a busy Autumn period for Ian Hughes' men. Although the margin of victory suggest a comfortable win, Aber's win was built on a solidity at the back which reduced Carmarthen to a handful of meaningful opportunities. Town Captain Stuart Jones headed over from an early corner, before Jamie Reed lobbed over audaciously from distance. Geoff Kellaway, picked out by Ross Stephens, sent a first time volley wide, before Reed drew a comfortable save from Lee Idzi. For the homesters Luke Cummings drew a good save from Mike Lewis with a header, and Lewis was again awake minutes later to save a deflected clearance in two rare attempts on goal the home side mustered. Antonio Corbisiero played in Chris Venables who shot just over from close range, and then Liam Lewis headed over for a goalless tie at the break. Aber's faultless back four of Corbisiero, Jones, Lee Surman and Craig Williams, with their covering midfielders Luke Sherbon and Stephens snuffed out any threat to the visitors' goal in the opening period of the second half, allowing the front four to cause real problems at the other end. Venables and Reed both went close but then with 19 minutes to go Kellaway, who had threatened all night, burst down the right wing before laying the ball back for Reed to score from the edge of the box, possibly with the aid of a slight deflection, to put Aber one up, deservedly. The challenge for Town now was to keep a clean sheet and this they did by attacking remorselessly: however the second goal took 86 minutes to arrive. The faultless Jamie Reed, once again shedding the autograph hunter- like attentions of Dwaine Bailey, found space down the right to play in the effervescent Darren Thomas, and the Cofi King won the game from ten yards. Reed back heeled Cledan Davies into space, and he went within inches of a third, before Craig Williams capped a Man of the Match performance at left back by nutmegging Sasha Walters before sending in a goal bound right footed volley which was touched in, inevitably by Venables in the 93rd minute to cap a 3-0 win and a great evening for anyone who holds the Black and Greens close to their heart. This performance gives Aber a strong foundation on which to built a Top Six push in the Dafabet Welsh Premier League this Autumn, starting on Tuesday evening at home to Bala Town (ko 7.45pm). A large contingent of Freshers are expected at Park Avenue to create a superb atmosphere on the night. Don't hear about it from your friends - see you there on Tuesday! Comments are closed.
