Corbettsports Welsh Premier League Championship Conference Saturday 31st January Aberystwyth Town 3 Newtown 2 Aberystwyth got the second phase off to a flyer, coming back from two goals down to beat Newtown 3-2. Newtown started the strongest, with a dominant 1st half display, taking the lead within 3 minutes through Luke Boundford. The away side were unlucky not to go two up, Sean Evans unable to capitalize on a defensive mix up. Newtown continued to press, Shane Sutton coming closest, forcing a top drawer save from Aber's Mike Lewis. The Black and Greens' first real chance came after half an hour, Mark Jones heading straight at Newtown's 'keeper. Newtown then doubled their lead through a Jamie Price penalty to end a disappointing half for the home side. The second half was much more open as Aberystwyth started to gain a way back into the game. Goalkeeper, Mike Lewis, made some key saves from a Newtown counter attack to keep Aberystwyth in the match. The tide of the match was definitely turning and in a mad 5 minutes, Aberystwyth scored 3 goals to take the lead. The first came from Mark Jones after a goalmouth scramble in the 66th minute before Ross Stephens scored a goal of the season contender on his debut to equalize with a stunning left footed volley into the top corner three minutes later. Sion James then headed home at the far post from a deep left wing cross to complete the most remarkable of turnarounds. Frustration boiled over for the away side, Jamie Price seeing red on 78 minutes, and despite a tense final 15 minutes Aber hung onto the lead to take all three points.
