 After being on the end of many disappointing and often heart breaking score lines against Bangor, Saturday’s 4-0 victory against the North Wales university city brought much happiness to the Aberystwyth Town faithful, writes Club Media Assistant Matthew Wallace. On an afternoon better suited to staying indoors, Town produced a stunning display, imposing and comfortable from the first whistle to the last, in stark contrast to the horrific weather conditions both had to play in.
After a goalless albeit entertaining first half, the game exploded into life on the hour mark thanks to a brace from Chris Venables and a strike apiece for Jamie Reed and Geoff Kellaway. “The performance from start to finish today was excellent", said Manager Ian Hughes. "Even in the first half where we didn’t score, but we were dominant. With all our players in we’ve got a hell of a team. The players we’ve got at this football club are excellent, scoring four goals and we could have scored more. We hit the bar three times and created numerous chances. That’s helped to improve our goal difference which is vital given it’s a tight league“ Ian Hughes stated after the match. Hughes was alluding to the fact that Saturday’s game marked the return to the first team of Geoff Kellaway, less than two months after being stretchered off with a serious looking knee injury. The boss was quick to heap praise on the club’s physio Ffiona Evans and the winger himself. “Our Physio deserves immense credit. Ffiona has worked tirelessly with Geoff over the past weeks. Geoff himself deserves credit for working so hard to come back from injury so quickly.” There can be little doubt that the introduction of Kellaway swung the momentum in Aber’s favour. His mazy running caused Bangor’s back line all sorts of problem and was ultimately their undoing. “He’s come back on today, grabbed the goal that he deserved and it’s great to see him back. We are very capable of creating chances but what was more pleasing was defensively we were excellent. Mike Lewis was confident, kicking great, coming to get the ball. He didn’t have a save to make at all. Stuart Jones and Lee Surman were both excellent. Even at 4-0 up against ten men, they were winning headers in the penalty area that they had no business winning which just shows the desire that is in the squad." As much as the Seasiders would like to enjoy the victory, there is little rest up as they play Carmarthen Town on Tuesday in a hastily rearranged fixture. “Hopefully the rain will stop by then!” joked Hughsey. “We know it’s going to be a tough game, they’re a very good side with some very good players. But things are starting to click for us now. We’re getting stronger, we’ve got players rediscovering form, players coming back from injury so we’ll be confident going into the game and hopefully the fans will come down to support us again like they did today.” Aberystwyth Town's home game tomorrow evening against Carmarthen Town kicks off at 7.45pm.
