Welsh Women's League
Sunday 5th May 2019 Aberystwyth Town Ladies 7 (Cooper 2', 34', Cat Davies 30, 45+1, Wylde 36', 79', Ashman 75' pen) Llangyfelach Ladies 0. Aber Town Ladies won their 17th successive league game to end their time in the Welsh Women's League in style. Caroline Cooper (2 goals), Tania Wylde (2), Cat Davies (2) and goalkeeper, Ffion Ashman (pen) were all on target for the Mid-Wales side, writes Steven Brookes. After entering the pitch to applause from their visitors, the league winners were hopeful of ending what has been an excellent season with yet another three points, and the Black and Greens got off to a near perfect start, Caroline Cooper capitalising on a defensive error before poking the ball past the keeper after two minutes. Ffiona Evans nearly doubled Aber's lead but was unfortunately denied by the crossbar. It took until the half-hour mark for Town to make it two, Cat Davies placing the ball into the net from the edge of the six yard box following good work down the right from Delun Roberts. Cooper grabbed her second four minutes later with a powerful strike from distance. 'Coops' then turned provider when playing the ball out-wide to Tania Wylde who cut inside, beat the defender and side-footed the ball into the net. There was just enough time to for Aber to make it five, Cat Davies poking the ball past the keeper after an excellent through ball by Caroline Cooper before the ball slowly crossed the line. In the second half some of Aber's youngsters were given a chance to impress. Dwynwen Davies was a half-time substitute whilst Sophie-Tia Griffiths and Charlotte Bowden appeared later on. Bowden came close to scoring her first goal for the club when her well-hit volley was saved by the visiting goalkeeper. With fifteen minutes remaining Aber finally scored a sixth... through arguably their most unlikely of goalscorers. Ffion Ashman was called forward to take a penalty that was awarded after a foul on Ffiona Evans and the popular goalkeeper made no mistake with her powerful left-footed strike. The final goal of the season was to be scored four minutes later and unsurprisingly it was Tania Wylde who found the net with a low shot from the edge of the area, the top-scorer's 34th goal in just 25 matches. The next league match for Aberystwyth Town Ladies will be a Welsh Premier Women's League fixture after a thoroughly deserved promotion and successful season!
