Tuesday 6th October Bala Town 0 Aberystwyth Town 1 Chris Venables' 86th minute penalty earned Aberystwyth Town a huge and deserved win at Maes Tegid last night which catapulted Aber back into the Top Four and inflicted the first WPL defeat of the season on high flying Bala Town. On a drizzly evening the game began fairly well for the visitors, who created chances right from the start. Stuart Jones headed an early chance over the bar, and then Craig Williams burst down the left to set up Geoff Kellaway, but his fierce shot fizzed over. Darren Thomas had a shot deflected for a corner, and Jones again went close, before Thomas again drew an excellent save from Morris with the visitors peppering Bala's goal. Back came the Lakesiders to show why they started the game in second place in the WPL and Lee Hunt was twice brilliantly denied by Chris Mullock in one on one situations. David Artell headed wide, before Mark Connolly sent a free kick just past the post, and Stuart Jones was on hand to make two crucial blocks to protect the clean sheet. Back at the other end Kellaway set up Rhys Griffiths, whose header was saved by Morris, and Morris again denied Griffiths with a one handed save down to his right. Geoff Kellaway was contentiously booked after appearing to be fouled in the box with visiting supporters roaring for a penalty, and a good half for Aber ended at 0-0. Aber came back out full of purpose and belief, and they dominated possession and looked the more composed side in the second half. Craig Williams sent a free kick over the bar, Kellaway almost burst through for a three on one, before shooting over from distance. Sion James did well to block a super shot from Bala's Mark Jones, but with Lee Surman enjoying a super game with Stuart Jones at the heart of the defence, well protected by the hard working Luke Sherbon and Ross Stephens, chances for the home side were at a premium. With Bala looking tired visiting supporters could sense a win was there for the taking, and then with four minutes to go the effervescent Jamie Reed chased a loose ball in the area, and home keeper Ashley Morris, who had been superb in both games, brought him down with a rash challenge to concede the penalty. Up stepped Chris Venables to bury the spot kick, and Aber saw out the game professionally to earn a famous victory. With this performance and result the Black and Greens have made a real statement of intent, and after earning eleven points from the last 15 on offer, Town are one of the in form sides in the Dafabet WPL.
