JD Welsh Cup Round Three
Saturday 12th November (ko 2pm)
Aberystwyth Town v Newtown
Welsh Cup Fever returns to Ceredigion this weekend as Aber Town host Mid Wales rivals Newtown at Park Avenue in a JD Welsh Cup Third Round match, on Saturday with a slightly earlier kick off of 2pm.
Any mention of Welsh Cup and Newtown in the same breath takes Aber fans back to a glorious spring afternoon in Bala a few years ago, when Seamus Heath led the Black and Greens to a 2-1 Semi Final win over the Robins, thanks to a brace from Declan Walker. The Aber support and celebrations that afternoon were delirious and supporters of the Black and Greens will be hoping for a similar outcome come the weekend.
Aber reached the Third Round with a penalty shoot out win away to Pencoed Boys and Girls Club, while Newtown beat Cardiff Corries 8-1 in the outskirts of the Capital to progress from Round Two with plenty to spare.
Last weekend Town Manager Anthony Williams had six players missing at Maes Tegid, but his side battled well, matching the hosts for shots on target before coming away on the wrong end of a 3-0 defeat. Williams will hope that a number of those missing players return on Saturday to bolster his squad as the Seasiders plot a route into the last sixteen.
Newtown meanwhile beat Jamie Reed’s Airbus by two goals to one last Saturday, with first half strikes from Zeki Ismail and Jake Walker enough to take the spoils. Despite the weekend’s results Aber sit two places above Newtown in 8th in the JD Cymru Premier, with fifteen points from thirteen games, one point more than Chris Hughes’ men.
The match provides a preview for a Christmas double header between the two sides, with Newtown returning to Park Avenue on Boxing Day, and Aber visiting Latham Park four days later in their final match of 2022.
Admission prices at Aberystwyth University Park Avenue Stadium are £8 for Adults, £5 for Concessions, £2 for Secondary School age children and free entry for Primary School age children, and admission will be cash only on Saturday. The match kicks off at the earlier time of 2pm. See you down the Park!
