 JD Cymru Premier Friday 10th January Caernarfon Town 0 Aberystwyth Town 3 New look Aber Town started the new decade off in the perfect way with a commanding 3-0 victory away to Top Six chasing Caernarfon Town, on a windy night by the Menai Straits last night. Captain Marc Williams got Town on their way on 35 minutes, and further second half strikes from Williams on 70 and 80 minutes had the Black and Greens and their fantastic supporters in Dreamland by the final whistle! Town’s three new signings: Pavel Vieira, Ilan Hughes and David Thompson all started, and their influence down the middle of the field was impressive. On a night of gale force winds Aber started with the natural advantage, but in truth the conditions affected the play and chances were few and far between early on. Geoff Kellaway tested Alex Ramsey in the first minute, Vieira almost picked out Williams in the box with a through ball, and Williams volleyed wide from 30 yards, while the off colour hosts were struggling to put passes together in the difficult conditions. Then the excellent Paulo Mendes won the ball down the right, and sent in a testing cross which was headed into the net by Williams. Aber’s amazing travelling support, who sang from the first minute to the last, danced for joy and Town were a goal up. The Black and Greens upped the tempo before the break with Hughes, Vieira and Mendes showing some nice touches in midfield: a Kellaway cross was deflected for a corner with super sniffer Williams ready to pounce, Mendes had a shot cleared and Richie Ricketts’ powerful volley brought a great save from Ramsay, who then denied Kellaway again from 30 yards to keep the score at 0-1 for half time. Aber were prepared for an onslaught after the break against the wind but the visitors remained in control. Kellaway nearly picked out Mendes in a breakaway, then Darren Thomas send the ball flying just over the bar for the Cofis’ first real opportunity of note in the game. Sion Bradley’s shot was deflected nicely to Connor Roberts in goal, but the strong winds was hindering Caernarfon’s plans with over hit passes the order of the day. Then Ilan Hughes made an incredible goal saving tackle in his own area to deny sub Sam Jones what looked a certain strike: as good as a goal. Kellaway went on another dangerous run and his cross just eluded Mendes, then Aber’s Portuguese enforcer won the ball in midfield, ran 40 yards towards goal before playing in Williams to volley Aber’s second into the bottom corner in front of the Green Army: 2-0! Williams had a shot blocked, then fired the next one wide, and for the hosts Thomas curled a volley wide, and sub Noah Edwards also missed the target after some trickery in midfield. Then with ten minutes to go Matty Jones’ free kick out 30 yards out on the right was headed goalbound by Mendes, and Ramsay’s parry fell perfectly for Williams to snaffle up his hat trick, and Aber’s third at the far post, with the Green Army disco dancing in delight as Aber lead by three. Jamie Breese for Caernarfon, and sub Luke Boundford for Aber volleyed wide and Thomas’ low shot was easy for Roberts in Aber’s goal, with the visitors holding on for victory after a strong and impressive performance which bodes well for the New Year. Supporters judged this to be Aber’s best performance of the season, and given the conditions and Caernarfon’s impressive home record it is hard to argue with that assertion. Certainly the Players and Management deserved huge credit for gelling so well so early, and the Black and Greens really need to kick on now if they are to challenge for a seventh placed finish.
