Aberystwyth Town FC kicked off preparations for the 2017/8 season last night with a joint training session involving the First Team and Under 19s at Park Avenue. Assistant Manager Wayne Jones told us more: "Our First session last night was shared with the Under 19s. It was a good session, and the Players were very workmanlike. Numbers were great, we had 33 Players there in all. As well as the core of last season's squad we had a few trialists and two new signings, Johnny Spittle from Airbus and Joe Phillips from Stourport Swifts". "The session was based on fitness, so we had some cardio and strengthening sessions, some short sharp 4 v 4 games, and yo-yo tests which we will come back to in six weeks time to measure individual improvements." "We are training twice a week running up to the Llanelli game a week on Saturday, and then an Open Trial game for local players the following Tuesday (18th July)." Footy starved Black and Green supporters don't have long to wait for their next fix as Aberystwyth Town kick off their pre-season friendlies a week on Saturday (July 15th) when they welcome Welsh League Division One Champions Llanelli to Park Avenue, with a 2.30pm kick off. Jones said: "Llanelli will be a tough test as the first game and after the initial phase of pre season, it will be good for the Players to get some minutes of football under our belts." Following the departure of Tony Pennock as First Team Manager in June the Club is in discussions with potential candidates to replace him, and an announcement will be made within the sixty day Licensing deadline. Jones said: "Behind the scenes things are ticking along nicely so that we can hit the ground running when the new Manager comes in."
