Aberystwyth Town FC are delighted to announce the signing of Cardiff City goalkeeper Matthew Turner on loan until the end of the 2022/23 season. Formerly of Leeds United Academy, Pembrey-born Matt returns to the JD Cymru Premier having spent the 2020/21 campaign with Haverfordwest County.
Spending time with Llanelli Town and Pontardawe Town among others in his youth, Matt joined Leeds United's prestigious academy in 2018. In 2020, Matt returned to Wales to join Haverfordwest County on loan, where he made nine appearances for the Pembrokeshire-based Bluebirds before sustaining an injury, cutting his spell short.
At the beginning of the following season, Matt agreed a two-year professional contract with Cardiff City where he has remained with the club's development side. Matt now returns to the JD Cymru Premier for opportunities in senior football with Anthony Williams' Seasiders.
Matt told us:
"As soon as I heard the club were interested in having me on loan, I've been really excited about the prospect of returning to the Cymru Premier. I know how important the club is within the local community and to its fans, so I hope to play my part and contribute in making a difference into the second half of the season.
I had a few conversations with Taff [Anthony Williams] before meeting the squad on Tuesday and everyone has been brilliant with me. I see this as a very good move in my development and look forward to getting started."
First Team Manager Anthony Williams commented:
"Matt's a talented young keeper who I believe has developed and matured since his last spell in the league was cut short due to injury. By numerous accounts, he has performed extremely well in the first half of this season with Cardiff City in game situations and in training, so we're very pleased to add him to our squad and aid his development in our league."
Matt goes straight into the Seasiders' squad ahead of tonight's trip to Flint Town (KO 7:45pm) - croeso Matt!
