Aberystwyth Town FC is delighted to announce that Club Captain Stuart Jones has signed a new Contract to remain with the Club for 2015/6. Stuart was a rock in the Centre of Defence last season as the Black and Greens managed an excellent fourth placed finish. Coveted by many, Stuart received six nominations from rival Managers for last year's WPL Team of the Season, and his retention is a major boost to Manager Ian Hughes as he plans for the 2015/6 season. Based in Borth, Stuart Jones signed for his local Welsh Premier League club in May 2012, and took on the role of Club Development Officer alongside his playing duties. Stuart began his career at Swansea City, and although he made over 30 appearances for the Swans between 2003 and 2005, moved on at the end of the 2004/05 season. Llanelli made no hesitation in making Stuart their first full time signing for over 50 years, and over the next 7 years made almost 200 appearances for the side and in that time at the club won the League, League Cup and Welsh Cup and qualified for Europe on several occasions. Stuart has also earned caps for both the Wales Under 21’s and the Welsh Semi Pro squads, and has been named in the Welsh Premier Team of the Year on no less than 4 occasions. Since joining Aber three seasons ago Stuart has made 90 appearances in Black and Green, scoring six times including a vital header at TNS towards the end of the season. Overall he has made 288 WPL appearances, scoring 20 goals. It is telling, and quite remarkable that none of these appearances have been as a substitute. More signings are in hand and will be announced in the near future. Black and Green Midfielders Geoff Kellaway and Luke Sherbon were delighted to walk away with two major awards at last night's Annual Club Dinner. Kellaway was rewarded for an excellent season by being voted as the Supporters' Player of the Year for 2014/5, while Sherbon picked up the Players' Player Award. The achievements of Chris Venables (WPL Player of the Season and Golden Boot for the second successive year), Wyn Thomas (inducted into the WPL Hall of Fame) and Anthony Evans, who won the WPL Long and Meritorious Service Award last weekend were also celebrated. In an enjoyable ceremony enlivened by the drole joke telling of Club Treasurer Emyr James, a number of awards were presented, as follows: Ladies Team Top Goalscorer Amy Jenkins Ladies Team Most Improved Player Emma Cartwright Ladies Team Player of the Year Nia Watts Under 19s Manager's Player of the Year Tom Wyn Roberts Clubman of the Year Martin Smith First Team Supporters Player of the Year Geoff Kellaway First Team Players Player of the Year Luke Sherbon Photos courtesy of Chris Howells Aberystwyth Town FC was intrigued to learn about a game played last Saturday at the Cardiff University Playing Fields between the ATFC Lions Oldboys, the Black and Greens’ onetime sister DIGS League side, and players from Aber Exiles FC, a Cardiff based Club now competing in the Cardiff Combination League Division 2 and affiliated to the South Wales Football Association. The Old Boys team included well known Town Supporters such as ex-Media Officer Mark Tanner, Kristian Jones (Bungle), Paul Coyne and Danny Emmison, but they were unable to prevent the Old Boys falling to a 6-0 defeat. The teams then retired to the Four Elms pub in Roath to enjoy the Champions League Final. James Naik, Club Secretary and Manager of Aber Exiles told atfc.org.uk: "To be honest our boys have been playing together for about two years now, and the Old Boys were a bit out of practice. We had a Trophy made for the game which we named the Huw Owen Library Cup." The Exiles play in Green and White shirts bearing an uncanny resemblance to Aber Town's shirts, and James explains: "About half our side either studied in Aber, or are from there. Quite a few of them follow Aber Town, and used to go to games when they lived there." "Last season started poorly but we ended it well and finished fifth. We are looking to set up a Reserve side this year which could see us promoted to Division One of the Combination League." Aber Town wish the Exiles all the best for the forthcoming season, and hope to develop links with the Club in the future. Aberystwyth Town FC are delighted to announce that Cledan Davies has signed forms to remain at Park Avenue for season 2015/6. Tregaron born Cledan returned to the club in June 2012 after a season away. Signed in 2009 from Tregaron Turfs after impressing then Aberystwyth Town boss Brian Coyne, left footed Cledan, happy at left back or as a left winger, became an important part of the team during his first season at the club. After being out with an ankle injury for most of the 2010/11 season, and finding his first team chances limited, Cledan spent time on loan at Penrhyncoch before signing for Tomi Morgan at Carmarthen in 2011. After starting most games and showing his worth at Carmarthen, Tomi wasted no time in bringing Cledan back to his local Welsh Premier team for the new season, and in his first season back, won Supporter's Player of the Year. Davies was an ever present in 2013/4 and was an integral part of the side which reached the Welsh Cup Final. Last season he represented the Black and Greens in the UEFA Europa League, and achieved a Top Four finish with Ian Hughes' men. Cledan is known for his swashbuckling attacking runs down the left flank, pinpoint crosses and occasional brilliant strikes, however one of his most memorable contributions last season was a 45 minute cameo in goal in October, when he produced one astonishing left handed save in the rain to keep a clean sheet at home to Newtown. Now aged 25, Cledan has made 154 WPL appearances, scoring 10 goals along the way. Croeso nol Cledan - rwyt ti'n gaffaeliad i'r tim! Aberystwyth Town FC were delighted to see Players and Club Officials receive a number of Awards at the WPL Annual Dinner in Llety Parc on Saturday evening. First up was ex Player and Club Director Anthony Evans, who received the Long and Meritorious Service Award for 2014/5 from WPL Chairman Peter Rees. Chris Venables then received the WPL Top Goalscorer Award (also known as the Golden Boot) for the second season running from ex team mate Rhys Griffiths. Black and Greens Assistant Manager Wyn Thomas was then inducted into the WPL Hall of Fame in recognition for 533 League Appearances and 60 goals since 1996. Finally, Chris Venables retained the WPL Player of the Season Award he won in 2013/4, after another astonishing 30 goal season from Central Midfield. Aberystwyth Town FC are proud of Wyn, Anthony and Chris' outstanding achievements and we look forward to congratulating them in person at Saturday evening's Club Dinner. |
