Aberystwyth Town will look to continue their fine form at Park Avenue as they welcome Bala Town in the JD Welsh Premier League in front of the live Sgorio TV cameras on Saturday evening. Aber fell to a disappointing defeat away at league champions The New Saints on Tuesday evening, but have been in good form at home so far this season, winning two of their opening three JD Welsh Premier League fixtures. The black and greens currently lie 9th in the league table, and will be keen to get back on track with a positive result and performance against the lakesiders on Saturday evening.
Despite lying in 9th place in the league table, Aber lie just three points behind second placed Connah's Quay Nomads, and know that a positive result on Saturday evening could catapult them back into the top six once more. Both the seasiders' victories so far this season have come at Park Avenue, against Llandudno and Llanelli, and Director of Football Nev Powell has already emphasised the need for his side to demonstrate strong home form if they are to be successful this season. After Tuesday's defeat, Powell insisted Town's players must remain positive, stating; "We'll have to dust ourselves down and not be too down-hearted about tonight's defeat, we've got to look at the positives and go into Saturday's game and have a right go at Bala". Ahead of Saturday's game, Aber will undoubtedly take heart from last season's JD Welsh Cup third round performance in which they thumped the lakesiders 4-0 thanks to goals from Declan Walker, John Owen, Joe Phillips and Luke Borrelli, playing some fantastic football along the way. Saturday's visitors Bala Town have experienced a tumultuous start to their season, winning their three home games against Carmarthen, Llanelli and Cefn Druids, but losing both their away fixtures against Newtown and Barry. Colin Caton's side spent big in the summer, signing the likes of Henry Jones, Anthony Miley, Steven Tames and Danny Gossett, and will pose a major challenge to the seasiders at Park Avenue. Former black and greens Chris Venables and Stuart Jones also ply their trade at Maes Tegid, and were a part of Bala's JD Welsh Cup winning side in 2017. In what is sure to be an excellent game at Park Avenue, please note that kick off on Saturday evening is at 7:30p.m, and the game will be broadcast live on Sgorio (S4C) and Facebook Live (Sgorio Facebook Page). Admission costs £8 adults, £5 concessions and £2 for u16's - as Aber look to make Park Avenue a fortress once more, why not enjoy some local league football before heading down to cheer on the black and greens to a positive result Saturday evening! Aberystwyth Town Football Club publicly congratulate Club Stalwart Geoff Kellaway on his 300th Welsh Premier League appearance last night at Park Hall, Oswestry. Club Statisticians have been busy all day adding up the appearances he has amassed over fifteen seasons, and confirmed the news to Geoff this afternoon, who was blissfully unaware of the statistical significance of last night's cameo appearance off the bench. Fan favourite Kellaway, whose blistering pace strikes fear into hearts of opposing Managers and defenders throughout the WPL, has been a major part of a Black and Greens attack force which notched over 140 goals between 2014-6, and his excellent form of 2014/5 did not go unnoticed. In April Sgorio confirmed that Geoff was joint top of the WPL Assist Table with 12, to add to his 10 Goals from 29 WPL games. His third goal in a hat trick at Bala, an audacious lob from outside the area, was nominated for Goal of the Month for March. Geoff was named on the bench in the WPL Team of the Season, and won the prestigious Aberystwyth Town First Team Supporters' Player of the Season at the Club Dinner in June 2015. Geoff began his career with Aberystwyth Town, making his debut during the 2003/04 season. He went on to make 141 appearances for the club, scoring 32 goals, and featured in the 2009 Welsh Cup final defeat to Bangor City. In May 2010, having been named in the 2009/10 Welsh Premier League team of the season, Kellaway joined Dandenong Thunder along with fellow Welsh Premier players Luke Sherbon and Jamie Reed. In August 2010, he was signed to a three month injury replacement contract with A-League side Melbourne Victory. He made his debut for the club as a substitute during a 2-2 draw with North Queensland Fury, becoming the 500th player to make an appearance in the A-League. He was released by the Victory and returned to Britain at the end of the 2010/11 season. In July 2011, he re-joined Aberystwyth Town and after one more season at Park Avenue, in June 2012 he moved to Llanelli, where he made his debut in the Europa League versus Kups in Finland. Geoff then moved to Carmarthen Town in January 2013 before returning to Park Avenue the following summer, where he has remained since, playing in the Welsh Cup Final of 2014/5, and the UEFA Europa League and Europa League Play Off Final last season. Since making his debut for the Black and Greens in 2003/4 Geoff has played 300 WPL games scoring 69 goals, of which 271 appearances and 65 goals were for Aber. His superb service to the Welsh Premier League was recognised at the Annual Dinner in June 2018 when he was awarded the Clubman of the Year Award. You can watch the accompanying video here. Congratulations from us all Geoff - you can't keep a good man down! Aberystwyth Town suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of full-time outfit and JD Welsh Premier League champions The New Saints at Park Hall on Tuesday evening. A hat-trick from Aeron Edwards (15, 37, 85) plus goals from Simon Spender (33), Jamie Mullan (43) and Adrian Cieslewicz (64) were enough to see the hosts to a comfortable victory on a difficult evening for the black and greens in Oswestry.
Aber started the game in bright fashion, with Rio Ahmadi back in the side in place of Geoff Kellaway to partner Ash Ruane up front, Steff Edwards back in at left back and goalkeeper Leigh Jenkins returning between the posts in place of the injured Terry McCormick. It was indeed the visitors who registered the first effort towards goal as Wes Baynes rifled a long range shot wide of the post, before the hosts responded as Adrian Cieslerwicz tested goalkeeper Leigh Jenkins with a low drive. The Saints gradually began to dominate possession, and opened the scoring on 15 minutes as Dean Ebbe slid the ball in behind for Aeron Edwards to slot beyond Jenkins and make it 1-0. Despite the early setback, Aber responded well and on 19 minutes notched their first effort on target with Declan Walker's grass-cutter, before Wes Baynes went even closer on 25 minutes as he strode on to Steff Edwards' cross but fired narrowly over the crossbar. Aber were managing to stay in the game despite seeing little of the ball, but on 33 minutes the Saints doubled their lead as Simon Spender snuck in at the back post to side foot the ball home and make it 2-0. Soon after, it was three as Aeron Edwards broke from midfield once more and calmly lobbed the ball over Jenkins in goal, and Aber were suddenly shell-shocked. On 39 minutes things seemed to go from bad to worse, as Dean Ebbe was tripped in the box, but Leigh Jenkins stood tall and saved Edwards' penalty with a brilliant dive to his right. That small victory was short lived however, as on 43 minutes the Saints made it four when Jamie Mullan scampered into the six yard area to tap home Cieslewicz' cross. The second half followed a similar pattern, with the hosts dominating possession and creating goal scoring opportunities. Jack Rimmer was introduced in place of Alan Goodall as Aber switched to a 4-5-1 formation, and they did well to deny the Saints a fifth as centre back Lee Jenkins produced a last ditch tackle to deny Spender. On 64 minutes the hosts did grab their fifth of the evening as Cieslewicz converted Spender's low cross, before Aber made two more substitutions with Joe Phillips and Geoff Kellaway replacing Ryan Edwards and Rio Ahmadi. In fairness, Phillips and Kellaway both produced some of Aber's best moments in the closing stages - Phillips playing Rimmer in on goal in the 73rd minute only for the ball to clip the post on it's way wide, before he struck a low effort inches wide of the post in the 83rd minute. On 85 minutes, Aeron Edwards finally grabbed his hat trick as he tapped home from close range to compound a miserable night in Oswestry for the seasiders. Aber must now turn their attentions to Saturday's live televised game at home against Bala Town, where they will seek a much improved performance and result at Park Avenue. Teams: The New Saints: Harrison, Spender (65), Hudson, Nembhard, Marriott, Holland (71), Edwards, Routledge, Mullan, Ebbe, Cieslewicz (74). Subs: Rimmer (45), Kellaway (67), Mendes, Blake, Phillips (67), Berner, Rowe JD Welsh Premier League Tuesday 11th September (7:45p.m Kick Off) The New Saints v Aberystwyth Town Aberystwyth Town will look to build on their positive start to the season as they travel to face league champions The New Saints at Park Hall on Tuesday evening. Aber have taken six points from their opening four league games this season, most recently beating Llanelli 3-1 at Park Avenue 10 days ago with second half goals from Rio Ahmadi, Geoff Kellaway and Joe Phillips. The black and greens will now look to cause an upset by claiming a positive result as they travel to the home of the league champions on Tuesday evening. After Town's latest league victory over Llanelli, Director of Football Nev Powell was quick to emphasise the versatility of Aber's squad, highlighting the change in performance during the seond half in which the black and greens scored 3 goals after trailing at half time. Powell commented; "We changed a couple of things round at half time and it worked, we were a different side second half. It's all about changing things when you need to, and you could see when we put Rio (Ahmadi) up front with Ash (Ruane) in the second half we looked a real force". Aber will again look for that versatility and adaptability on Tuesday evening as they face league champions The New Saints. Town's defensive qualities will certainly be tested against a side who've won the league title 7 times consecutively since 2012. Nevertheless, Powell claimed his side will be ready for Tuesday's test, stating "In that second half against Llanelli we won every header in defence and every second ball in midfield, and when we're on our game we can be a difficult team to beat". Tuesday's hosts The New Saints enter the game at the top of the JD Welsh Premier League, having won three of their opening four games - their only defeat coming away at Connah's Quay Nomads. They also crashed out of the IRN Bru Cup on Saturday evening with a surprise defeat on penalties to third-tier Scottish side Queens Park FC. They will no doubt be keen to get back to winning ways against Aber on Tuesday evening at Park Hall, and the black and greens will need to wary of a backlash following the Saints' weekend defeat. Tuesday also marks a historic occasion for Aberystwyth Town Football Club and referee Cheryl Foster, in what is her second appointment as referee in the JD Welsh Premier League - and is the first time a female referee has taken charge of a game involving the black and greens. Cheryl made her debut as an assistant referee two years ago in a fixture between TNS and Aber! The club welcomes Cheryl's appointment as a positive move for equality in football and the JD Welsh Premier League. In what is sure to be another stern test for the seasiders, kick off at Park Hall is at 7:45 p.m, and The New Saints address is listed as Park Hall, Whittington, Oswestry, SY11 4AS. Come along and cheer on the black and greens or follow Aber's Twitter Feed for live updates from Tuesday evening's game. Welsh Women's League (WWL) Sunday 2nd September Llangyfelach Ladies 2 Aberystwyth Town Ladies 7 Thanks to a dominant opening day performance, Aber Town Ladies got their new season off to a fantastic start, with goals coming from Tania Wylde (4), Naomi Evans (2) and Helen Evans, writes Steven Brookes. On a very sunny day in South Wales, the Black and Greens got off to a great start. After Caroline Cooper's effort was blocked on the line using a hand, the referee decided to point to spot. Despite being awarded the penalty, the away team were unhappy that referee chose not to play the clear advantage and disallowing Tania Wylde's goal. But it was Wylde who stepped up to take the penalty and confidently scored. The home side then scored an equaliser against the run of play when Claire Lewis had the simple job of putting the ball into the empty net. Aber soon regained the lead though when Cooper played an excellent through ball towards Wylde who poked the ball past the onrushing keeper. Last season's top scorer Naomi Evans scored Aber's third, controlling the ball well before turning and firing the ball into the back of the net. In the second half the Black and Greens continued where they left off as winger Helen Evans scored early on, beating two players on the edge of the area and then finding the top corner with a powerful strike. Tania Wylde then completed her hat-trick beating the keeper from close range with a low shot into the bottom corner. It was the home team that scored the next goal of the match, Jacqueline Maddock with the goal after a quick counter-attack. There was to be no dramatic comeback though as Aber increased their lead again and once again it was Tania Wylde on the scoresheet. After using some great skill to beat a couple of players she was then able to beat the keeper with her strike from a tight angle at the near post. The Ceredigion based side were not going to settle for six though and continued pushing for more goals. With just a few minutes remaining forward Naomi Evans grabbed her second of the game when Wylde passed across the box and Evans finished with a powerful side footed strike. The 7-2 win represented a fantastic start to the season for Aber Town Ladies, who will now hope they can impress again when they play Rhos on Sunday 9th September.
