Dafabet Welsh Premier League Saturday 10th October (ko 2.30pm) Newtown v Aberystwyth Town No sooner had the final whistle gone on Aberystwyth Town's vital win at Bala on Tuesday night, than news came through that the Black and Greens' next opponents Newtown, had themselves earned an excellent 4-1 win at Airbus, which hosted them into the runners up position. Visiting the second placed sides in the WPL twice in four days is some task at the back end of a run of 7 games in 21 days, but after Tuesday's terrific win inflicted a first League defeat of the season on the Lakesiders, Ian Hughes' in-form squad must be starting to believe that anything is possible. Eleven points from a possible fifteen, three away wins in a row, and four goals conceded in 5 games are the stats underlying this resurgence, and the individual form of key players such as Lee Surman, Craig Williams, Luke Sherbon, Darren Thomas and Stuart Jones has improved throughout the season. The Players will certainly need to be back at their best on Saturday to get a result at Paveways Latham Park, and they may feel that they owe Newtown one after the Robins' dramatic Play Off win at Park Avenue last May. Club Captain Stuart Jones will make his 100th appearance in Black and Green on Saturday, and his 298th overall WPL appearance, and the fact that all of these appearances were starts, with no sub appearances, shows the high regard in which his Managers have held him. Everyone at the Club looks forward to congratulating Stuart on a great achievement come Saturday afternoon. The Coach to Newtown will leave Park Avenue at 11.30am, and a return trip will cost £10 for Adults and £5 Concessions. Don't Be Left Behind! Welsh Womens Premier League
Sunday 4th October Aberystwyth Town Ladies 4 Newcastle Emlyn Ladies 0 Aberystwyth Ladies earned their first win of the season on Sunday against local rivals Newcastle Emlyn Ladies. It was a bottom of the table clash with both teams searching for their first points to kick start their season. Aber started well and applied pressure on the Emlyn defence early on. Chances from Gabi Hughes, Annalee Hudson and Naomi Evans saw Emlyn’s keeper Kirsty Fisher make good saves to keep it goalless. A corner taken by N.Evans saw the ball land to Sian Evans, with her shot going inches wide of the post. It was in 34th minute that Hughes managed to slot the ball coolly past the keeper to break the deadlock. Further chances came with Amy Jenkins hitting the post where the rebound fell for Ffiona Evans to shoot over. Emlyn gained a free kick deep in Aber’s half just before half time when Angharad Jenkins’s ball went just over the crossbar. The first half ended 1-0. The first half pattern of play was repeated in the second with chances at the Emlyn keeper. It wasn’t long before Hudson got her first club goal and Aber’s second when on 53rd minutes Hughes played the ball in to Hudson to slot into the back of the net. Emlyn though did not give up and battled in the middle of the park against Aber’s trio of N.Evans, Jenkins and Emma Cartwright. Emlyn’s best chance of open play came when a long range shot between the defence saw the ball go marginally wide. A big boost was given to the Aber squad on 80th minute with Tania Wylde making a return into the team after a 2 year absence with a broken leg. On the 85th minute, Wylde’s first touch saw her set up Hudson’s second, Aber’s third of the game. The game was not yet over when on 91st minute, new signing Melanie Pons, got her head on to the end of Josie Pugh’s cross to score on her home debut and secure Aber the 3 points. This win has now seen Aber Ladies jump out of the relegation zone in to 9th place. Report by Ffiona Evans Dafabet Welsh Premier League Tuesday 6th October Bala Town 0 Aberystwyth Town 1 Chris Venables' 86th minute penalty earned Aberystwyth Town a huge and deserved win at Maes Tegid last night which catapulted Aber back into the Top Four and inflicted the first WPL defeat of the season on high flying Bala Town. On a drizzly evening the game began fairly well for the visitors, who created chances right from the start. Stuart Jones headed an early chance over the bar, and then Craig Williams burst down the left to set up Geoff Kellaway, but his fierce shot fizzed over. Darren Thomas had a shot deflected for a corner, and Jones again went close, before Thomas again drew an excellent save from Morris with the visitors peppering Bala's goal. Back came the Lakesiders to show why they started the game in second place in the WPL and Lee Hunt was twice brilliantly denied by Chris Mullock in one on one situations. David Artell headed wide, before Mark Connolly sent a free kick just past the post, and Stuart Jones was on hand to make two crucial blocks to protect the clean sheet. Back at the other end Kellaway set up Rhys Griffiths, whose header was saved by Morris, and Morris again denied Griffiths with a one handed save down to his right. Geoff Kellaway was contentiously booked after appearing to be fouled in the box with visiting supporters roaring for a penalty, and a good half for Aber ended at 0-0. Aber came back out full of purpose and belief, and they dominated possession and looked the more composed side in the second half. Craig Williams sent a free kick over the bar, Kellaway almost burst through for a three on one, before shooting over from distance. Sion James did well to block a super shot from Bala's Mark Jones, but with Lee Surman enjoying a super game with Stuart Jones at the heart of the defence, well protected by the hard working Luke Sherbon and Ross Stephens, chances for the home side were at a premium. With Bala looking tired visiting supporters could sense a win was there for the taking, and then with four minutes to go the effervescent Jamie Reed chased a loose ball in the area, and home keeper Ashley Morris, who had been superb in both games, brought him down with a rash challenge to concede the penalty. Up stepped Chris Venables to bury the spot kick, and Aber saw out the game professionally to earn a famous victory. With this performance and result the Black and Greens have made a real statement of intent, and after earning eleven points from the last 15 on offer, Town are one of the in form sides in the Dafabet WPL. It's a good time to catch them - and your next opportunity is on Saturday afternoon when they travel to face Newtown at Paveways Latham Park (ko 2.30pm). Dafabet Welsh Premier League Tuesday 6th October (ko 7.45pm) Bala Town v Aberystwyth Town Aberystwyth Town's Dafabet WPL Bandwagon rolls on to Bala tomorrow night, with the Black and Greens showing real signs that they have turned the corner after a disappointing start to the season. Rhys Griffiths' injury time equaliser at home to a resolute Connah's Quay side meant that Aber have taken 8 points from their last four games, and have conceded only four in those games - a major improvement. Town now enter a run of three very challenging away fixtures and their upsurge in form will be severely tested at Maes Tegid tomorrow evening. Aber v Bala clashes have turned into Epic Encounters since both sides established themselves as Podium Contenders last year, and their League encounter at Park Avenue two weeks ago was no different, with the Lakesiders looking very good for the first twenty minutes, before falling back to endure a Black and Green Barrage in the second half. The game ended in an honourable 1-1 draw, and with both sides fully respectful of each others' potential, another tight game could well be reasonably expected. Hovever, a punishing recent schedule in the WPL and Word Cup has left both Clubs' Physios busy. Antonio Corbisiero and Mike Lewis were both ruled out of Saturday's encounter by injury, and Bala are also reported to have some walking wounded running up to Tuesday's encounter. Aber's last visit to Maes Tegid ended up as a 3-3 draw, with a stunning hat trick from Geoff Kellaway lighting up the evening for supporters of the Black and Greens. Will we see another six goals tomorrow? You will find out by being there, and £10 (Adults) and £5 (Concessions) will get you on the Coach, which leaves Park Avenue at 4.45pm. Saturday 3rd October Aberystwyth Town 1 - 1 Gap Connah's Quay Two late substitutions proved key for Aberystwyth as they battled for a point in a hotly contested fixture. Cledan Davies and Rhys Griffiths combined in injury time to level the score and deprive the visitors, Connah's Quay of a victory. It was a tight affair and there were few clear cut chances and both sides were limited to shots from distance and the odd moment of magic. The Nomads started strongly but their two early efforts only found the woodwork. At the other end, Craig Williams whipped in several dangerous free kicks but without a final product. A cross field ball from Geoff Kellaway led to Aber's best chance of the half as it fell to Darren Thomas who slipped in Jamie Reed but his shot couldn't beat John Danby in the visitor's goal. Nick Rushton then forced a wonderful save from Aber keeper, Chris Mullock with a low curling effort towards the bottom corner. The evenly matched contest meant fewer chances as the half wore on and 0-0 seemed a fair reflection of the proceedings at half time. The Nomads came out of the blocks quickly in the second half, taking a lead when Nick Rushton tapped home a corner in the 49th minute. From then on the visitors looked solid in defence and a breakthrough for the Black and Greens was looking increasingly unlikely. Eager to fight back, manager Ian Hughes switched formations, bringing Rhys Griffiths on for Ross Stephens to provide more attacking options. But it was Connah's Quay who continued to press, Callum Morris drawing yet another amazing save from loanee, Mullock. As the game was drawing to a conclusion, Ian Hughes threw Cledan Davies on in place of Geoff Kellaway and it was his cross that was pinballed around the box, falling to Griffiths who poked home to send the crowd into delirium. Both sides held on for a 1-1 draw which keep the Black and Greens in contention for a Top 6 place. The match was attended by Portsmouth's legendary defender, Linvoy Primus who will surely have enjoyed this riveting encounter. Report by Tomos Ings Aberystwyth Town announce the loan signing of 27 year old TNS Goalkeeper Chris Mullock, who goes straight into tomorrows squad to face Gap Connah's Quay in the Dafabet Welsh Premier League, which kicks off at 2.30pm. First choice Keeper Mike Lewis has been sidelined with a calf problem, so Town Manager Ian Hughes has moved quickly to plug the gap with the highly rated stopper who made his name for Cefn Druids in their Welsh Cup Final Appearance of 2012. Wrexham-born Mullock joined TNS from Cymru Alliance side, Cefn Druids in the summer of 2013 and spent the majority of the 2013/14 season on loan at Newtown after joining the Robins in September 2013. Chris famously kept a clean sheet against Finnish Giants, MyPa in the Europa League first qualifying round and helped his former team mates to a famous draw. He has made 80 WPL appearances in all for Druids, Newtown and TNS since making his WPL debut in 2006/7. He will wear the Number 21 shirt for the Black and Greens. Everyone at Aberystwyth Town welcomes Chris to the Club and wishes him all the best for his Loan Period at Park Avenue. |
