Town Edge Cup CLassic on Deeside: Saltney Town 0 Aberystwyth Town 0 (Aber win 5-4 on pens)17/10/2021
JD Welsh Cup
Saturday 16th October Saltney Town 0 Aberystwyth Town 0 (Aber win 5-4 on penalties) Aber Town progressed to the Welsh Cup Quarter Finals with a win on penalties away to redoubtable Saltney Town, who had done a superb job to attract a record crowd of 604 which made for a big match atmosphere, and demonstrated all that is good about the JD Welsh Cup. Aber peppered Saltney’s goal but home keeper Josh Cooke held out, however the Black and Greens’ penalties were immaculate and Raul Correia scored the winner to ensure two positive away results in four days for Antonio Corbisiero’s men. The visitors started confidently and Owain Jones shot wide early on. Forwards Correia and Steff Davies were working very hard to cut down the hosts’ opportunities to break and on a small pitch there was a flow of chances. Cooke held Alex Darlington’s free kick, and at the other end Jordan O’Brien took some set pieces which failed to trouble Gregor Zabret in the goal. Harry Franklin put in a low cross which Steff Davies nearly connected with, then Cooke punched clear a free kick from Darlington and Owain Jones set up Correia who shot straight at the goalkeeper. The hosts were trying to build from the back but with Jack Thorn a permanent shield in the middle, and dependable Louis Bradford and Lee Jenkins blocking off the central area they couldn’t get through. Cooke denied Jones again, and then saved from Steff Davies soon afterwards to keep his side in it. Jenkins was next to have a header saved from a free kick and then at the other end Ryan McCleary sent a header wide for Saltney. Darlington and Davies had further shots blocked, then Steve Chiocchi drew the largest noise of the half, curling a right footed effort past the post for Saltney. Steff Davies had a penalty shout denied, and Tom Booth headed over at the other end, and despite dominating the half Aber just couldn’t score, and the players went in at 0-0 at the break. The excellent sportsmanship on display was demonstrated at half time as Aber Town’s subs joined in a game of keepy uppy with Saltney’s young players, but into the second half and Aber were right back at it, with Davies yet again denied and Franklin seeing an early effort turned over for a corner. Steff Davies saw a back flick cleared, then Zabret was out quickly to block off the lively Thomas Booth down the left. Booth got the crowd going again, curling an effort just wide soon afterwards and Aber knew they were in a game. The visitors were still controlling the ball, but Saltney’s dogged defending was demonstrated when keeper Cooke chased Owain Jones half way up the touchline and wisely brought him down before Aber’s wily winger could get a shot in! Jones’ nemesis struck again, saving a curled effort, and Cooke then saved from Sam Phillips, Darlington, and Rhys Davies in close succession to somehow keep the scores level. Jones and Phillips down the wings were trying to get past Saltney’s deep block, but there was just no way through for Aber. As the sun came out Phillips had an attempt deflected over the crossbar, and Darlington hit the post with a free kick. As the game moved towards the final whistle Shaun Tinsley saw the chance of glory for the hosts but found only the side netting, and a frustrating game for the visitors ended 0-0 with Saltney defending brilliantly for the full ninety minutes. Welsh Cup matches no longer feature extra time but proceed straight to a penalty shoot out, which adds an element of jeopardy to proceedings for higher ranked clubs, so Aber were delighted to gain an advantage when the unfortunate Lee Butterworth blasted Saltney’s first spot kick over the bar. Successful penalties followed from Darlington, Thorn, Jon Evans and Phillips for Aber, and Jack Roberts, Chiocchi, Jake Johnson and McCleary for Saltney, which meant that Town needed to score their last penalty to progress. Up stepped brave Correia, who had missed a spot kick on Wednesday, and he kept his nerve to slot home and send the visitors through; however Aber’s muted celebration at the end reflected an appreciation of the excellent job Saltney Town had done both on and off the field. Two huge results away from home in four days have transformed Aberystwyth’s outlook, as they now stand just three matches from Europe and have a February Welsh Cup Quarter Final to look forward to as the long winter months draw in. The draw will be held on Monday night at 8pm on the FAW’s Youtube and Facebook channels, but on Friday League points will be up for grabs again as Corbs’ cup heroes take on Penybont at Park Avenue, with an 8pm kick off. We go again! Saltney Town vs Aberystwyth Town
Welsh Cup 4th Round Saturday 16th October 2pm Kick-Off Live on Radio Aber! Aberystwyth Town’s Welsh Cup journey continues tomorrow with a visit to Ardal Leagues North West side Saltney Town. Antonio Corbisiero’s men come into the game on the back of Wednesday’s victory at Cefn Druids, courtesy of a Lee Jenkins 34th minute goal. The Black & Green Army will be hoping this form on the road will continue at Sandy Lane this weekend. Saturday’s opponents may be the lowest ranked side left in the competition, and the only Tier 3 side, but they have already pulled off a couple of shock results against higher ranked opposition. In Round Three, they faced our Ceredigion neighbours Penrhyncoch, triumphing on penalties after a 1-1 draw. The Bordermen currently sit 6th in this seasons Ardal North West league table, having picked up 5 wins from their opening 10 games. They come into this game on the back of a 6-0 victory at home to Blanau Ffestiniog last weekend and have won 2, drawn 2 and lost one from their last 5 league games. Tommy Booth is Saltney’s top scorer so far this season, with 12 goals in league & cup combined. JD Cymru Premier Cefn Druids 0 Aberystwyth Town 1 On a night when the result was the most important thing, Antonio Corbisiero’s men dug deep and earned a huge 1-0 win away to improving Cefn Druids, thanks to Sgorio's Man of the Match Lee Jenkins’ towering 34th minute header. Aber defended stoutly to earn a crucial clean sheet, and went close to adding to the lead on numerous occasions, but they got the vital three points which took them up to tenth in the JD Cymru Premier. Rhys Davies and Steff Davies both returned to Aber’s starting line up, while The Druids have clearly been doing some work behind the scenes since Interim Manager Any Turner’s first match back at Park Avenue a few weeks ago, and started the game with Joe Faux threatening down the left flank. Town however created the first clear chance when Sam Phillips set up Harry Franklin at the far post, but his attempt was comfortably collected by Druids keeper Ryan Neild. Louis Bradford also had a goalbound effort saved by Neild, and then at the other end Faux crossed for Aberystwyth born Charlie Edge to curl over the crossbar. The Druids were breaking dangerously and super keeper Gregor Zabret had to be alert, saving Emmanuel Agyemang’s cross, then saving a further attempt from the burly striker later on. Steff Davies had a header cleared off the line for the visitors, before Faux set up another chance, crossing for Zabret to save from a back post header. A rugged challenge on Franklin then earned a free kick for Aber and when Alex Darlington curled in a nicely angled delivery, the unmarked Jenkins rose like a salmon to put Aber ahead with a bullet header: a big goal in Aber’s season. The Black and Greens, wearing yellow for the night, took confidence from the score and another Jenkins header earned a corner, but Neild saved Phillips’ delivery. Faux brought a near post save from Zabret with a low drive, and Aber were lucky to survive a scramble from an injury time free kick out on the right, so the score remained at 0-1 for half time. Aberystwyth started the second half well with Steff Davies causing havoc up front with a domineering performance. Three minutes into the half, Franklin looked to have scored when Neild fumbled his long range effort, but TV coverage showed that the home goalie had just about prevented the ball from crossing the line. The visitors were looking purposeful and quicker to the tackle, keen to nab the killer second: Steff Davies broke through but then had his effort blocked, Phillips had a low effort deflected for a corner, Franklin had a header saved and Steff Davies’ shot was blocked, before Franklin was fouled in the box to earn Aber a penalty on the hour. Sadly Raul Correia’s attempt flew over the bar and Druids were still in it. Niall Flint sent in a dangerous ball which evaded everyone in Black and White, and Dan Cabral hacked an attempt over with Zabret’s goal looking ever more under threat. Bradford had a goalbound header from a free kick saved, and then Zabret was out like lightning to deny Agyemang a certain equaliser. Darlington aimed another free kick in from the left and Franklin got the ball in the net, only to be denied a goal for an infringement. Aber survived more Druids pressure as Charlie Edge blasted over, and when sprightly sub Owain Jones burst through in injury time and brought a great save from Neild after a 70 yard run the game looked won. Town had to survive one final free kick from Edge, and finally after four minutes of injury time, this nerve wracking game ended! This match was an engrossing one for the Green Army, who are today delighted that their team got the job done, and can now look upwards as the JD Cymru Premier season edges towards the halfway point. They will now take that winning confidence into another trip to North East Wales, to face Saltney Town in the JD Welsh Cup fourth round on Saturday (ko 2pm). Cefn Druids vs Aberystwyth Town
JD Cymru Premier Wednesday 13th October 7.45pm KO Live on Sgorio Facebook & YouTube! The Black & Greens travel to The Rock on Wednesday night looking to get back to winning ways following Saturday’s narrow home reverse to Caernarfon Town. Despite a dominant performance, numerous chances and three big penalty claims the equalising goal just would not come for Antonio Corbisiero’s men, as Aber went down to their fifth single goal defeat in seven Cymru Premier games. A real positive from the game was the return to action of influential defender Lee Jenkins, who was reunited with Louis Bradford at the heart of the back four – a partnership that really flourished as the season went on last year and the Black & Green Army will now be hoping for more of the same this time around! Wednesday night’s hosts have endured a difficult season so far, although their spirits will have been lifted by an excellent away performance and a share of the spoils at 2nd placed Bala Town on Saturday. Niall Flint was the man on target to give Druids their first point of the season. Flint’s goal was Druids 3rd in two games since the appointment of former Tottenham, Portsmouth & Rotherham midfielder Andy Turner as Interim Manager at the end of September. Turner had originally joined the club as Head of Coaching in the summer and moved into this additional role following the departure of Niall McGuiness on September 24th. He has already faced Aber Town during his short tenure so far, the Welsh Cup 3rd Round tie at Park Avenue on 25th September saw ATFC run out 4-1 winners thanks to an Owain Jones goal and a hat-trick from Mathew Jones. Last season, the Black & Greens recorded four victories against Druids – 4-0 and 3-0 at The Rock and 3-1 and 5-1 at Park Avenue; the 3-0 victory at The Rock in April in particular being memorable for Jamie Reed scoring his 100th Cymru Premier goal, whilst club icon Geoff Kellaway made his 350th Cymru Premier appearance. Their squad list for this year includes a number of former ATFC players. Steff Edwards has had two spells at Park Avenue, initially under Alan Morgan from 2010-11 before returning under Nev Powell in 2018 for an 18 month spell. Pavel Viera made a handful of appearances in early 2020 before Covid-19 curtailed the season, whilst George Harry did likewise at the start of the 2020/21 campaign. The Rock can be found at postcode LL14 3YG, but if you can’t make the match, Sgorio’s cameras will be broadcasting this match live on their Facebook & YouTube platforms, so be sure to tune in as the Black & Greens look to grab another victory on the road JD Cymru Premier
Saturday 9th October Aberystwyth Town 0 Caernarfon Town 1 The curse of the one nils struck again at Park Avenue on Saturday as the Black and Greens went down to their fifth single goal defeat in seven Cymru Premier games at home to Caernarfon Town. Darren Thomas scored a 16th minute goal for the visitors and despite a dominant performance, numerous chances and three big penalty claims the goal just would not come for Antonio Corbisiero’s men. A healthy crowd of 375 turned up on a cloudy afternoon and Aber were pleased to welcome back talisman Lee Jenkins to centre back. The hosts started strongly, with Sam Phillips touching in Harry Franklin who touched the ball wide. Composed Aber were denied a huge penalty shout when Phillips appeared to be tripped in the box, and then Raul Correia appeared to be blocked by home keeper Tyler French in the area, but nothing was given. Against the run of play the hosts took the lead when Rob Hughes won the ball and slid in onetime Seasider Thomas who blasted home from close range for a vital lead. The Cofis are well schooled in organised defending a lead and showed their mettle. French brought down Franklin inches outside the penalty area, and Franklin headed wide from Matty Jones’ free kick, then Phillips had a shot deflected for another corner, and Jamie Veale curled an effort just wide with Aber on top. Louis Bradford saw a header saved by French, then Alex Darlington’s volley was tipped wide, and the dominant Bradford rose like a salmon to head over. Aron Simpson headed wide from Hughes’ free kick in the visitors’ second attempt, but then Gregor Zabret pulled off a point blank save to deny Mike Hayes and keep Aber in it. Bradford had a shot blocked then hit the crossbar with the rebound and the Caernarfon goal’s charmed life persisted till half time, with the Gwynedd men going in a goal to the good. It looked like the second half was to follow the same pattern as the first when captain Jack Thorn volleyed wide within the first minute of the second half, and Sam Phillips appeared to be blocked in the area for a third unsuccessful Aber penalty shout. The peerless Zabret then needed to pull off another point blank save to tip over Thomas’s header, and Hayes blasted over from a good position out right, with the visitors making a game of it in the second half. A series of Aber corners came and went, with Phillips seeing a shot blocked and Correia blasting a goalbound effort which somehow deflected under French for a corner. Livewire Rob Hughes then sent a super left footed volley towards the top corner only for Zabret to come to the rescue yet again, and denied Hayes again in a one on one moments later, to keep home hopes of a comeback alive. Aber just had to keep going, and that they did with Correia and Thorn the next to send efforts wide. Correia saw an overhead kick fly wide, then Zabret denied Thomas in a really entertaining second half. Franklin agonizingly hit the side netting from Matty Jones’ deep free kick, and then a Jones effort deflected for a corner, and the redoubtable visitors held out through four minutes of injury time to snatch a huge result. This was a truly infuriating match for the Black and Greens with Aber dominating possession and chances, and for home supporters it must seem like Lady Luck has ripped up her Aberystwyth Town season ticket and chucked it into the river Rheidol. However if Aber keep on performing like this the results will come, and the Black and Greens have two visits to North East Wales coming up to turn the tide. They visit Cefn Druids in the Cymru Premier on Wednesday evening (ko 7.45pm), before travelling to take on Saltney Town in the Welsh Cup Fourth Round next Saturday (ko 2pm). Keep the Faith! Aberystwyth Town vs Caernarfon Town
JD Cymru Premier Saturday 9th October 2.30pm KO Match Day 8 of the 2021/22 season sees Caernarfon Town visit Ceredigion, which will be the first time this year’s intake of Aberystwyth University students will have the opportunity to watch the famous Black & Greens live at Aberystwyth University Park Avenue! This weekend’s visitors have had a decent start to the campaign and currently sit just outside the top 3 on 11 points and as always will provide a stern test for the Black & Greens. Huw Griffiths’ side have 3 wins from the opening 7 matches, in addition to 2 draws and 2 defeats. They are unbeaten in 4 league games coming into this one and progressed in the Welsh Cup two weeks ago by beating Prestatyn Town. Danny Gossett and former Seasider Darren Thomas are the men to watch at the moment, both having scored 3 goals so far this term. Gwion Dafydd and Cai Jones have also contributed 2 goals each, whilst at the other end young goalkeeper Jakub Ojnzynski has kept three clean sheets in the league. Antonio Corbisiero’s Aber Town should come into this game having taken a lot of positives from last weeks battling performance away to table toppers The New Saints, in particular the return to the starting line up of long-term absentee Steff Davies. Louis Bradford will be also available for selection again for tomorrow's match, having been unable to play against his parent club. Matches against Caernarfon Town are always entertaining – none more so than the last meeting between the two sides in March, when on the first game back since the winter lockdown, Aber led 1-0 until 85 minutes when Caernarfon scored a quickfire double, before Jamie Veale equalised in the final minute of added time with a sublime free kick! Town supporters will hope for a result in what may be a first Black & Green experience for many new or returning students to our wonderful part of the world - we hope to welcome you back time and time again! There is always a warm welcome at Park Avenue for all - locals, students, supporters from afar, and all in-between! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In accordance with the FAW Return to Play Protocols for Alert Level 0 Regulations, published in August 2021, please do not enter the ground if You have tested positive for COVID-19 in the last 28 days You have been or are currently a contact of a COVID-19 case or a suspected case You are currently self-isolating You are feeling unwell You have a cough, throat pain, muscle pain, unusual weakness, short of breath, chest pain, any palpitations (abnormal heart rate), diarrhoea, conjunctivitis, a loss of taste or smell or any other signs or symptoms of COVID-19 Please refer to HSE guidelines (https://www.hse.gov.uk/coronavirus/index.htm) on how you should proceed should any of these conditions apply to you If you are in any doubt please do not attend the fixture The Board of Directors, Aberystwyth Town Football Club |
