Corbettsports Welsh Premier League Saturday 21st March (ko 2.30pm) Newtown v Aberystwyth Town Aberystwyth Town go into Saturday's Mid Wales derby at Paveways Latham Park knowing that they are fully in control of their destiny come the end of the season. Standing just two points shy of second place, and with both main rivals facing daunting trips to Fortress Park Avenue before the seasons end, Town now know that five wins from five games will guarantee them a best ever WPL season and a UEFA Europa League ticket. The first of those five games comes on Saturday against Welsh Cup Semi Finalists Newtown, who won 6-3 at Latham Park on a bad day at the office for Aber in October, though Town took revenge with subsequent 1-0 and 3-2 wins at Park Avenue more recently. Town will be buoyed by the return of the Phenomenon that is Chris Venables, and they will need all his nous to prevail against a side who - especially at home - have gained excellent results against even the Top Sides this season. Manager Ian Hughes was keen to praise the superb atmosphere created by the Black and Green Army on Friday night, and large numbers of Town Supporters are expected to converge on Latham Park on Saturday. Three points on Saturday, coupled with a Port Talbot defeat at home to Champions TNS would in any case guarantee a Top Four finish for the Black and Greens - which in itself would be a magnificent achievement for a side competing in the Championship Conference for the first time. However, having spent the majority of the season near the Top of the League Ian Hughes' men have earned the right to aspire for an even higher finish come April 26th. You can aspire with them by joining the Green Army on Saturday: the Coach leaves Park Avenue at 11.45am. The Football Association of Wales and the Welsh Premier League are conducting further research with supporters on the time period of the League’s calendar.
Following on from research conducted via the Welsh Premier League Fan Survey last season, this fans vote on the Welsh Domestic Football Season has been compiled. Currently various factors including; poor weather conditions during the months of November to February result in the postponements and re-scheduling of most fixtures across various levels of the Welsh Domestic Pyramid. External television deals with other leagues highlighting the expansion of their live televised coverage to Friday's could threaten attendance throughout the pyramid during a traditional August to May season. There is a possible opportunity of capitalising upon this by shifting the Welsh Domestic Football Season to benefit our National Leagues which would lend to the development and sustainability of it's clubs. Aberystwyth Town supporters will be delighted to hear that their Number One Number Ten Chris Venables returns from suspension to the Black and Greens' squad for Saturday's vital Corbettsports Welsh Premier League game at Newtown.
Chris told atfc.org.uk this evening: "I can't wait to get back into it, I'm fit and ready, and raring to go. The break has been frustrating but it may turn out to be a blessing in disguise, as we had a busy summer with not much of a rest. Now I've had a few weeks off and I'm ready to go. It's a crucial game for us on Saturday and it's nice for me to come back for a game at my most local team, Newtown. I've got great memories of our Welsh Cup Semi Final up there this time last year, so it's all set up nicely for a big local derby." Chris has been a huge influence on Aber's best season in years, scoring an amazing 25 goals from 22 starts in attacking midfield, and he remains nine goals ahead of his nearest rival for the Golden Boot of 2014/5. He also earned worldwide recognition for his scoring exploits in the Calendar year of 2014 since the turn of the year. Manager Ian Hughes commented: "Though we've got goals going throughout the team, he'll be back on Saturday and of course it's a major boost. Chris gives us that edge, that winning mentality. He can influence players around him, and he's a leader on the pitch, which is what we need." Saturday's game at Paveways Latham Park kicks off at 2.30pm, and the Supporters Coach leaves Park Avenue at 11.45am. A full match preview will follow tomorrow. After a thrilling and exciting 2-2 draw at home to Port Talbot on Friday night, Aberystwyth Town Manager Ian Hughes was keen to pay full tribute to the superb Vocal Support provided to the team by Aber's supporters on Friday night. "We shouldn't underestimate the importance the crowd played. They were excellent and it's the best I've heard Park Avenue this season. the Dias Stand was bouncing! It was a great advert for the Welsh Premier League and the atmosphere was great. Park Avenue on a Friday night is something special and no other Club can create that atmosphere." Looking forward Hughes was keen to enlist that vocal support for Aber's crucial two remaining home WPL games against Airbus on Sunday 29th March and Bala on Friday 17th April. "We're going to need the same excellent support when Airbus and Bala come to Park Avenue as we saw tonight, and hopefully we'll be there or thereabouts at the end of the season." Looking back at the game Hughes said: "It was a good game, the Players showed excellent spirit and determination to come back from two down. It looked like only one team was going to win it in the second half but unfortunately we couldn't quite get that winning goal." Aberystwyth Town FC Club Event, March 11th 2015 Aberystwyth Town FC were delighted to host Show Racism The Red Card Cymru's educational club event last week. The following report is reproduced from SRTRC's website. Young people from Ysgol Plascrug and Ysgol Gymunedol Tal-y-bont attended the stadium to take part in the event for the day. Our education worker Noam Devey delivered a workshop in the morning to the young people educating them on the topic of racism using interactive activities and discussions. Pupils prior to attending the ground at school were set a task to prepare for the afternoons anti-racism “press conference”. Pupils had to create a newspaper name and were tasked with researching racism in sport and society. Pupils also were required to read newspapers and online blogs to explore how they are designed and written. From the information they had learnt they had to prepare questions for the press conference at the event to help produce their article for their newspaper after the event. In the afternoon pupils watched our educational DVD which gave them a last opportunity to obtain further knowledge on the topic before the question and answer session in our “media / press conference event” Aberystwyth Town FC Women’s player Chelsea Maiklem and U-19s Assistant coach Aneurin Venables attended the event to take part in the press conference joined by Campaign Worker Jason Webber. Pupils now in the role of newspaper journalists were selected to ask questions, introduce themselves and the newspaper they “worked” for followed by their question. The journalists posed some really challenging questions for the players and had clearly researched and planned some well thought out questions. The best asked question won match tickets and a SRtRC goodie bag. When the pupils return to school they will use all the information they had learnt at the event along with the responses from the players to write and design their article. We would like to thank both the schools for attending the event and the club for working in partnership to host the event and providing the prizes for the pupils.
